Hmmm... Since Raceland likes to schedule up anyways... Can I assume they'll continue to schedule LCA? Without a trip to Raceland to partake in the BEST high school football atmosphere anywhere... football just won't be the same for LCA anymore if that doesn't happen. It's downright criminal of the KHSAA to take that amazing sampling of food off of LCA's plate! :popcorn:

An eye opening play in this game was on one of the LCA kickoffs. The LCA kicker hit the field goal post upright bar about 6 feet up the pole. That's 70 yards in the air... with no wind. I saw Craig McIntosh hit the crossbar once and bounce the ball through in 2007 at Lloyd Memorial on a kickoff... however, that was wind aided. This new LCA kicker is the real deal!

I ran this game through Massey tonight and I couldn't believe the resulting score. So just for kicks, I put the Cardinals up against the current 3-0 NFL Pittsburgh Steelers. I knew the Mayfield offense was potent, but the defense appears to be stout as well... the Steelers only scored on a field goal against the 4th string of Mayfield players... which happened to be against all the Mayfield player's Moms. Yikes! I vote we cancel the rest of the season and send all 6 Class trophies to Mayfield. No need to play anymore football on Fridays! :isurrender:

I stand in awe and salute you! That's impressive! I still manage to fat-finger the one-and-only camera record button I have to press on each play with a double-dump on occasion which ends up missing a play... at least 2-3 times a season. I couldn't imagine trying to do two things at once... Warren Central needs to double your pay! :thumb:

I'm curious... what process do you use to record to DVD? Is your camera fed into a DVD burner directly? If so, is this a 2 person operation (camera operator... and DVD burner operator)? Or do you consume the entire SD card post game? Just curious what process you use (I'm assuming you're shooting AVCHD with that camera?) to convert the AVCHD to DVD in 5-10 minutes? I couldn't agree with you more... haven't touched a miniDV tape in the past 2 years.

Can you clarify what you mean by "production" software? What do you want to do with it? Are you referring to football game breakdown software (like XOS Thunder, Digital Scout, etc.)... or are you looking for football highlights video production software (like Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premier, etc.)... Or are you just looking for something to produce DVDs (like Nero, Adobe, Encore, etc.)?

Purchasing a camera for football isn't as simple as grabbing any 'ol camera available... there are lots of things to consider. 1) Price 2) Storage (miniDV Tape, Hard Disk, Flash Memory, DVD) 3) Ease of moving content from camera to DVD (and potentially to computer) 4) Quality 1) Price - Budgets will vary widely for each and ever school. I think there are essentially 3 grades of pricing: a) low budget consumer grade (under $500.00) b) medium budget - pro-consumer grade ($900-$1400) c) pro level cameras (above $1500) 2) Storage - you need to weigh where your game film's ultimate destiny will be. a) DVD - if all you ever need is a DVD of your game, then a DVD camera should be considered. Then when the game is complete, you're DVD is pretty much ready to copy in a duplicator. So game copies can be ready within 10-20 minutes of the game ending. b) DVD and Computer - You need to weigh and understand your computer program's ingestion needs... Not everyone is inputting game film into a computer program to be broken down by each play... If not, then you can ignore this consideration. However, if you are executing this procedure for your team, you need to understand the input mechanisms supported by your football analysis program (miniDV tape over a Firewire connection is very prevalent... but is rapidly becoming old school). c) Hard Disk and/or Flash Memory - this is the direction where things are headed... so you will future-proof yourself somewhat if you go here now... but things are still being ironed out in regard to computer interfacing... so beware of those obstacles. 3) Ease of moving content - this topic is somewhat mentioned above, but can also be addressed using a portable DVD recorder to generate your first "master" game DVD. The down side to using a non-DVD camera is that it will take you the exact time you filmed a game (in the 35-50 minute ballpark, depending on how you film) to get your first "master" DVD. Inputting into a computer, then authoring a DVD can double this time sometimes... but there are faster ways... but they're sometimes not so obvious. 4) Quality - We're in an HighDefinition world now... but many colleges have not made the switch to HD yet either (inlcuding UK.. I just visited to checkout their setup a few weeks ago). But more importantly is the lens quality on the camera and the "optical" zoom capability. More zoom is better, and don't be fooled by "digital" zoom numbers (where pixels are duplicated instead of using "good" optics). If you do go the HD route, you'll still need to burn non-HD DVDs which is possible using a mini-recorder. Thanks for the KHSAA link and the additional information provided in this thread... great stuff! I'm retired now from filming for the past 4 years for Lexington Christian. We've traded with RAM & Co. for years, and their film quality is always top notch! As well as their preparation and competition... In Lexington we're all closet RAM fans... of course only when we're not playing each other! Some of the things I saw transpire over the past 4 years with other teams during my involvement are: When teams received GOOD quality film, the would tend to reciprocate with better quality film over time (that's how I got better over time as well... some teams we traded with had AWESOME film... and that stepped up my game as well). I'm guessing that the ONLY way this happened was when the coaching staff shared received film with the video person on staff. I'm guessing that 90% of the people performing the filming duties for a team shoot the Friday night game, and throw that over the fence to the coaching staff and are never involved in the process again until the next Friday night. So there is no perspective provided on what is "good" and what is "bad" from a film standpoint. I'd suggest that the video person sit in a coaching review session of the upcoming opponent and just monitor what goes on (just keep in mind you're a guest and not the main focus of those sessions... coaches like to focus on football and not technical video stuff). When you see the staff turn off the film and punt because it wasn't shot from a tripod and the entire staff was getting a headache watching it (drives home how important a tripod is). You'll also begin to gather a better understanding of why the list of "recommendations" was put together. Filming the sticks and penalties allow you to re-create a game, instead of seeing the team show up 30 yards down field and wonder what just happened? Was a play removed from the film... or just missed on accident (it happens to the best of us)... or were there two 15 yard penalties assessed? As you can see in this thread already, several "teams" get a bad rap on their video provided... but the poor guy shooting the games has no feedback mechanism to get better. So he's getting slammed each and every week by the opposing coaches... and he just keeps assuming he's doing a great (or good enough) job. I think it would be a great idea to provide some sample footage links somewhere (ideally with some audio commentary) over it explaining what is being filmed and why... and also show some BAD film, with audio commentary over that as well... just in case it isn't obvious why the film isn't optimal. Just some food for thought... RAM, if you'd like, I'd be more the happy to help you out with this since I do have a full video production studio at my disposal.

As the new season approaches, we'll have some new camera personnel stepping in for various schools to perform the game filming duties for tape trading throughout the season. Is there a KHSAA set of recommended guidelines on how games should be filmed for consistency purposes? I've been searching through the KHSAA's site, and have not been able to find anything yet.

Cool... so if my son could transfer from his 1A school to a 6A school... sit out a year per KHSAA rules... and then play again... he'll be bigger, faster, and stronger? How exactly do the 6A schools accomplish this? Osmosis? Is that legal? What could 6A do for 1A/LCA's 6'5"-290lb Zach West? Could they grow him to 6'10", 350lbs, and get his forty speed down under 4.5?

At LCA we make recruiting highlight video available to the players if they are interested. The process includes the player putting the primary effort in to select the plays to include and they are also responsible for the sequencing of the plays. It is important to front load the video with the "best" plays just in case a coach that is reviewing the film only looks at the first 30-60 seconds of a player's highlights before moving on to the next DVD in the pile. All of our season footage is in a computer database and it is a fairly simple process to select and tag plays for some players (i.e. skill positions), and a more involved process to select and tag plays for the other positions. For 2009, our database has over 3,200 individual plays available on the season for LCA games (over 30,000 plays are in the database for opponent scouting footage). The plays can easily be split out to offense, defense or special teams... and can further be split out by Ball Carrier, Intended Receiver (by completions, incompletions, or both), tackler, interceptor, fumble recovery's, etc. Game DVDs are also available upon request as needed for the players. The football program currently picks up the cost of the DVDs and duplicating of the first 10 copies. Additional copies and mailing costs are the responsibility of the player. In this day and age, the online version of the clips are more than sufficient for "first look" requirements, and are typically followed up with DVDs as requested. The online clips can be e:mailed immediately by anyone on the coaching staff at the moment they are contacted about interest in a certain LCA player. I've included a few sample clips of some LCA players from this 2009 season as separate threads in this forum. As noted in a previous post on this thread, it is important to "highlight" where possible the specific player is on the play to minimize the reviewing coach's initial time investment in watching the clips.

My son played on the LCA line this year. He has his lineman buddies are over to the house once a week to play games in our basement. They all said Hazard hit us the hardest up front of anyone we played this year with Lexington Catholic being a close second. I think it was said earlier in this thread that one team finishes first, and everyone else finishes 2nd. For every season up until 2009, LCA went home each of those seasons with that 2nd place mindset. Doesn't really matter what the pollsters note in their polls, the reality is there is only one team that finishes first... everyone else is tied for second. A couple of years ago, perhaps the TWO best baseball teams in the state happened to be from the same district and faced off against each other in the first district game. Only one team advanced, the other team went home. The team that lost that opening district game could have beat every team that made it to the state baseball finals that year. Only one team took home the first place hardware, and another took home the 2nd place hardware that year. That's the exciting thing about High School sports... On any given night, anything can happen. If there were a best of 7 series played, the better team would surface most of the time (not always). The only way we'd ever know who was the better team between Hazard and Mayfield would have been if they had played each other in 2009... and that didn't happen. So I'll have to look in the history book to make my decision on who is the second best team in Class-1A for 2009, and there Mayfield sits alone listed as the 2009 runner-up. Everyone else in Class-1A is tied for 3rd... and might as well be listed alphabetically, which puts Hazard way down on the list.
