Webster County and Madisonville both have a shot at the finals from the lower bracket. Hoptown isn't the same team is has been for the last four years...in fact, hasn't been playing as well the last month of the season as it was earlier.

In 1997, tiny Dawson Springs with a 12-13 record, knocked off Madisonville on the Maroons' home floor 61-60. When the home team beat Hopkins County Central the next night (it was a 3-team district,) it gave Dawson Springs its first district title since 1959. Don Parson retired at season's end...after 30 years at Madisonville and 37 as a head coach...with 726 wins. At the time, it was 4th best in Kentucky history.

I know you are joking, but I never saw Dale or Hardy with a camera. We sat next to them several years on press row...always on the side and usually near a free throw line. Saw Hardy at the Sweet 16 just last year. Good guys!

I love the Lit-Ratings. Always used them while on-the-air. I'll take computer ratings over "people-voting" every time. Takes the personality, the what-have-you-accomplished-lately attitude, the "who-won-the-last-game against-so-and-so," and the folks who trade votes out of it. If you prefer the AP poll (or Cantrell or whatever,) I'm fine with that. The more different kinds, the more fun. The more conversation. This is a part of sports that should be just fun.

Oldham, regarding the 1978 final: I saw a picture of the player's hand that had gone up the net and was touching the ball. It had been published in one of the newspapers...though which paper and which edition has long since escaped me. And I don't remember if the block was at the end of regulation or at the end of overtime. Some of that info is also packed away with my scoresheets in the attic. You guys keep coming up with this historical stuff, and Mama is going to have to put up with me hauling a bunch of those boxes back downstairs to sit next to my computer.

The district tourney there ought to be a dandy. Again. Lots of upsets over the years, and three teams good enough to win it again this time.

At the state tournament, John Tong also loved to page the two guys who kept the official scorebooks: Charles Nelson (Charlie) Ruter and Richard (Rozie) Rozelle. And, associated with that 1976 tournament, "Big Six" Henderson (from Bowling Green I believe) ran the game clock for his last time. He was on the clock for the semi-final between Edmonson County and Shelby County...when about six seconds inexplicably ran off the clock at the end of the game with Shelby County at the free throw line and a three point deficit. They made both free throws, but had no chance to foul on an in-bounds pass...and all the protestations to the contrary, no time was put back on the clock. There was no rule in place to allow such a change. I think I have notes on the back of my scoresheet from that game detailing all that. If any of you remember it differently, I'll go look it up to see if we agree.

You are closer to the situation than I, but I wouldn't judge Haworth's coaching ability too harshly. You are right...he has assembled quite a bit of talent at Hoptown...but he has an awfully good record to go with it. Also, his "cussing out" some fans doesn't seem to fit the profile. Again, I'm not real close to the situation...just looks that way from way down here.

Abernathy was head coach at Shawnee just that one year: 1976. He replaced James Gordon, who had been head man for the 5 years before that.

I may be mistaken, but it seems Denny Crum hired Male's head coach (Wade Houston) to be an assistant with the Cardinals...the year that Darrell Griffith and Bobby Turner started there.

EZ Living, regarding your 3-point goal comment: my post about John Tong was about him...not the 1976 state tournament. Sorry if I didn't differentiate properly. You are correct: the 3-point basket wasn't initiated in high school until the 1987-88 season.

John Tong was quite an institution. His voice, his diction, and his habit of drawing out words made him a huge part of the state tournament. He always acknowledged every substitution...so important to the bench of every team at the end of a game...when kids could say they got on the floor at the state tournament and their name was broadcast to the entire crowd. "A-a-a-a-t the line, Curry will have one and the bonus." "G-o-a-l by Belcher!" "G-o-a-l by West, a three-point goal!" And at least once every tournament he would walk around press row between games of a double-header speaking to each of us and shaking hands. Our station had broadcast the entire tournament each year from the early 1950's through 1991, but I was so glad to be there in 1996...though as a spectator this time...when they presented him with a going away present after this last state tournament.

We were broadcasting that game back to the 2nd region and Western Kentucky. Thrilled to have two Western Kentucky teams in the final (2nd and 4th region.) Disappointed that "our" team didn't win. Thrilled that David was able to slay Goliath if it meant saving Kentucky from class basketball. Christian County's athletic director told me years later that Edmonson would probably have won that game 8 out of 10 times...that the match-ups just favored Bo's boys by that much. It was the first time the crowd favorite had won the final in a long, long time and to be in that kind of atmosphere at Freedom Hall was wonderful.

The Herald-Leader does the Class of the Commonwealth, I believe, in-house. The Courier-Journal traditionally has its all-state teams voted on by the coaches. The Associated Press all-state teams are voted on by media outlets that subscribe to the AP.

I have such a transfer unit called "Dazzle DVD Recorder" purchased at Best Buy a year ago for $63.99. Converts VHS to DVD.

The Courier-Journal says it will publish its all-state team Tuesday. I haven't seen anyone publicize the date of the Mr. Football/AP all-state teams.
