Forty years later: Edmonson County's stunning state title

Recommended Posts

I will admit I had never heard of Edmonson County prior to this Sweet 16. What a fantastic story for a small school like this to come from nowhere to win the state and stop a lot of the classification talk that was stirring in 1976. Many were complaining that the Louisville city schools (Shawnee, Male, Central, Seneca) had too big of an advantage because of their large enrollments at the time. Edmonson County took care of that myth with a title.

I was in 7th grade. Back then Channel 19 in Cincinnati carried the games and I remember watching it.

My memory says they had a character for a head coach.

I too remember watching this game on Channel 19 when I was 12, but at the time was unaware of just what a Cinderella story that it was. I had never heard of Edmonson County before, but just assumed that they must've have been a powerhouse to be in the championship game, and to win it.
