Newt Wins In South Carolina

Featured Replies

This is more evidence of what a terribly weak candidate Romney is. Since losing contests last cycle to Huckabee and McCain - who was the independent-attracting, “electable” candidate - he’s now lost to Santorum and Gingrich. This time Romney is the “electable” guy and he’s still struggling. This is the person who is going to be formidable against Obama? He’s made it this far by default. No other candidate has proven they are seriously prepared and/or competent enough to win a nomination. Huntsman botched his campaign. His lack of experience in national campaigns showed. Pawlenty chose an awful strategy. Perry proved himself a dolt. Bachmann is certifiable. Santorum is an extreme, one-issue candidate. Gingrich is a formidable debater but undisciplined otherwise it seems. Romney has simply had a professional organization and kept disciplined. That’s about it. That might be good enough to win in this weak of a field, but I don’t think it says much about Romney.

Weak in Republican primary voters' eyes. In the fall race, he is the stronger candidate. But can he get there? That is the battle Romney has always faced in trying to get the nomination. He doesn't appeal to the Republican right primary voter so he can't get the nomination. I agree with other posters. If Newt somehow wins the nomination, it is a slam dunk for Obama in the fall. Women voters and the middle are not going to vote for Newt. If Newt wants to have any hope with women in the fall, he needs to tell his tart to go home and get out of the spotlight. Every time I see her next to him, I cringe. And I am not a woman.

First bolded - definitely

Second bolded - probably

Did this answer the question about Newt's support by evangelical Christians despite his personal life or was it just a reaction to his spanking John King?

That is a good question. I would say Newt may be able to ride that wave for another primary or two. Voters despise attack politics so I have no doubt that Newt gained votes as a result of the media and his response. Unfortunately, attack politics wins votes so no matter how much everyone complains, they are here to stay. And it will be worse than ever this year as a result of the Supreme Court opening the door to PAC's.

I don't think he's much stronger in the general election either. I think he's acquired the stigma of being a moderate mainly because he was a Republican governor of a liberal state. But, he's flipped on every issue that made him a moderate before. In past elections Republicans have had little trouble nominating the more credible candidates who could win general elections, even if they weren't very conservative or the most conservative (McCain '08, Bush '00, Dole '96, Bush '88).

Gingrich also hammered Romney in three areas: his tax returns/Bain capital, his flip-flops, and Gingrich proved himself far more dynamic and exciting. Those are the same areas Obama will be attacking and contrasting with him. Obviously, Gingrich had stellar debates this week, but Romney also had his worst, fumbling over the issues I just mentioned. I think Republicans sense those weaknesses and I think it will hurt Romney much more than pundits let on. Of course, I could certainly be wrong, I've underestimated the stickiness of these stigmas before, but Romney comes across as the Republican incarnation of John Kerry '04.

Romney with his waffling on the tax return question made him look foolish.

I remember when you were bashed for that. Interesting story from MSN: http://nbcpolitics.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/01/21/10207804-conservatives-evangelical-christians-rebuff-romney-in-south-carolina

Three out of five voters interviewed in the exit poll said that it mattered somewhat or greatly whether a candidate shared their religious views and Gingrich beat Romney by better than two to one among such voters.[/

I should have known better. Never underestimate the south.

Exactly. This is pretty much what I've been saying since day one. When the evangelicals, born-agains, and the South come out for Romney then I will think he has a chance to a) win the nomination and more importantly b) defeat Obama.

Don't ever count them out.

I think I mentioned a Gingrich surge. Not positive though 8)

That's remarkable when you're considering the fact that the candidate voters in a Southern state said that about is a convert to Roman Catholicism. The United States is a different place these days...

Will call you about November 15th, 2012. Until then stay sleeping. Good night...

Good night to you as well.

Just keep an eye on the unemployment rate and gas prices. If they are up in August and Romney gets the nomination. WAKE UP! Until then nothing to do.

Gotcha.

Okay. Cool. Wake me up when it looks like Obama may lose.

This is why I love PP92. Where else can you find thorough analysis such as this?

FWIW...Habib has this thing covered pretty well IMO.

Agree on the Habib statement. He's the one who told me I can go back to bed.
