^To make sure Newt DOESN'T win? That makes no sense...Haven't we been hearing all along about how Mitt wasn't conservative enough for the core Republicans to support?

Correct. I took at is they thought that Newt would have zero chance to win against President Obama.

Hopefully they wise up and realize this. Whether Republicans support or agree with Romney or not, it's painfully obvious he's the only candidate with a chance against President Obama. He's got the organization and the pockets to go blow for blow with the President.

That's how I see it too. I'm a Republican, and have voted that way in every presidential election since I first voted in 1972, but if Gingrich wins the nomination I may not vote in this one.

^I'll be voting one way or another....If the nominee is Newt, I'll either be casting my vote for Gary Johnson (if he's on the ballot in KY) or President Obama. No chance will I ever vote for Gingrich.

Well, I also forgot to mention the biggest reason. He has zero chance of winning against President Obama.

Considering Romney's struggles to get nominated I'm not so sure either of their chances are much different.

See, a Newt nomination would have you voting the way you believe! :D

Not true IMO.

Romney's toughest task has always been garnering enough support from the conservative base to win the nomination. He's the type of candidate that will appeal to the moderate Democrats and Independents more so than President Obama. Assuming the Republicans are motivated to oust President Obama, he'll have their support for the general, and be able to steal some of the more moderate Democrats and Independents from the President.

 Very true. I really hope there's a day that I can cast my vote for someone I almost completely agree with AND that person actually has a real shot at winning.

Not true IMO.

Seems like all of that Independent and Democrat support is pretty much gone. At this point, I'd say both main GOP candidates suck equally...

Other Republicans who have fit Romney's mold - the establishment-backed, electable moderates - have historically had little trouble winning the nomination. So, I don't think Romney's struggling can be blamed on that, but on his many other flaws as a candidate. He may go on to win, but Republicans are unconvinced.

He's also not a moderate. He's switched his views on everything that would have made him a moderate or attractive to moderates and is to the right of Gingrich on several issues, namely immigration and foreign policy.

Do you think this switch helps explain the polling numbers above?

Both are tied among the GOP nationally at 29%. Both also trail Obama in a head to head match up 50-48.

It's definitely part of it. The sudden movement is likely because his negatives are being highlighted right now, whereas he's been able to avoid that for nearly the last year. But these numbers are going to change an untold number of times between now and November, especially the head-to-head numbers with Obama. Most people don't pay attention to politics as much as those who read this forum do, and even those who do are probably staunch in their partisanship.
