January 6, 201214 yr Okay, so let me first say, I have no experience with guns (other than going shooting with my uncles a couple times when I was younger), have never taken any kind of safety classes, etc., and have no idea what the proper process is in purchasing a gun. With that said, I'm going to be looking to purchase one here in the pretty near future. I'm thinking a handgun would be the best way to go, as my basic desire for one is protection. I'm very much against hunting, so I see no reason to have a rifle or anything of that nature. Suggestions? Information? Advice?
January 6, 201214 yr They say revolvers are good handguns to start with. It's a simpler kind of gun. Only thing you lose with a revolver is with the number of rounds you will be able to fire when loaded. It can be a pain to constantly reload when target shooting.
January 6, 201214 yr Whats your price range? And do you want something you can fit in your front pocket, fit in a larger coat pocket or hide next to your bed at night?

January 7, 201214 yr Author Just for home use. Something I could keep near the bed. I figure I can always go the concealed carrier route later on if necessary. As far as a price range, I have no idea what they run, so I'm open on that.
January 7, 201214 yr If you're wanting a handgun for home defense I'd look at the Taurus Judge. It's a revolver. But if you want semi-auto, I'd go with Springfield XD or XDM. The 9mm XDM has a 19 round mag. 9mm ammo is cheaper than .40 or .45 caliber. It's also the smoothest shooting semi-auto handgun I've ever shot. I'm also a big fan of my Glock, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone new to guns as the only "safety" it has is not pulling the trigger.

January 7, 201214 yr I recommend the Red Ryder BB Gun...the one with a compass in the stock & this thing which tells time.

January 7, 201214 yr I highly recommend the Judge. Google it, great home defense weapon. Now, in the sports world, statements such as this are qualified by accompanying statistics. Is a "great home defense weapon" determined by the number of killed/wounded home invaders?
