November 17, 201114 yr     That's classic. Randy blew my cover. I trained hard for that role. I still have scars on my knuckles from hitting that mask. That's good stuff. I can't stop laughing. My jheri curl was dry as all get out.... You were rocking that curl something fierce.
November 17, 201114 yr Author I haven't read it yet but I will. I threw out Life to be funny and Monster's Ball deserved a mention. Best interracial scene ever.I should have realized that Life was meant to be a joke, my bad. Halle is discussed in the article, so I'll wait a bit before I go into my thoughts on it. On the last part, "make me feel good"...
November 17, 201114 yr To some degree, this has to be a product of our society. White people are still the largest majority, so it only stands to reason they are more interested in stories related to other white people. It doesn't mean something else can't or won't generate big interest, but generally speaking, people are more interested in things they relate to more. JMO
November 17, 201114 yr He mentions him when discussing his 5th prejudice that they still can't show a black man dating a white woman. In the Pelican Brief the movie is altered so that Denzel and Julia Roberts don't actually have sex. As for your point, I'm going to have to think a little harder on Denzel's filmography. At first glance I thought he fit into the Will Smith mold, but some of this blockbuster leads were about race relations. i.e. Remember The Titans so I'm going to have to do some IMDB searching. Any thoughts on #5? I'm struggling to think of anytime a black man dated a white woman when it wasn't specifically about that. I defnitely believe the prejudice exists, but it's pretty surprising that I can't think of one example that goes against the grain. Here are some just off the top of my head. A Soldier's Story(this is the first movie I ever saw him in.) Glory Training Day

Several James Bond movies...Love Actually...whichever Mission Impossible had Thandie Newton in it.
November 17, 201114 yr Kind of on topic, one of my favorite castings ever was John Wayne as ......genghis kahn.

Certainly not a blockbuster, but in The Day After Tomorrow, a black scientist is married to a white woman and they have a baby.
November 17, 201114 yr Several James Bond movies...Love Actually...whichever Mission Impossible had Thandie Newton in it. Aren't those all examples of white men getting with black women? The article is specifically talking about black men with white women.
November 17, 201114 yr Author Several James Bond movies...Love Actually...whichever Mission Impossible had Thandie Newton in it.Did Bond actually date any of them? I actually meant to include the phrase "besides the two he mentioned" (Love Actually was one of them).
November 17, 201114 yr Author This is to everyone, do you believe that the prejudices discussed by the author in the article exist? Why or why not?
November 17, 201114 yr This is to everyone, do you believe that the prejudices discussed by the author in the article exist? Why or why not? 1. We still don't care about history that doesn't involve white people. Disagree. See my post, #22 in this thread. 2. If it's a blockbuster, the star better be white (or Will Smith). I could personally care less what race they are. I think this prejudice may exist, but if it does, I would guess it has almost everything to do with numbers and what sells. 3. Movies are still weirdly prudish about some subjects. On the whole, yes. Still, you can find some independent or foreign film about just about any subject. Again...it's about what sells. 4. Only the pretty girls are allowed to live. I don't make much of an effort to watch horror movies. I guess you could count suspense films too, but still, I never took much notice. Might be true, might not be. 5. They still can't show a black man dating a white woman (unless that's what the whole movie is about). I think, for the most part, the taboo on interracial dating is still alive and well in the US - and I think it is on the part of all races.
November 17, 201114 yr #2. If it's a blockbuster the star better be white (or Will Smith). What constitutes a blockbuster? Also, for Morgan Freeman I don't agree that he was only the lead in one of his movies. I would say he was the lead in Seven, Kiss the Girls, and Lean on Me to name a few.

Also, for Morgan Freeman I don't agree that he was only the lead in one of his movies. I would say he was the lead in Seven, Kiss the Girls, and Lean on Me to name a few. I'm not sure what constitutes a Blockbuster, but I don't think those three fit that bill. I own and enjoy them all, but I don't think they'd be considered a blockbuster hit.
November 17, 201114 yr A blockbuster would be a movie that brings in at least 100 million right? 150 million?
November 17, 201114 yr Good article. I am indifferent. I agree with a lot of the points made but for the most part just make a good movie and I'll be happy regardless of how much money it brings in. I loved Hitch and would have loved to have seen Will and Cameron Diaz together. I'd love to see any movie that has a black man and white woman as a couple and the main characters without the movie being about their interracial relationship. My wife and I have been together for 10 years and we have never sniffed the first issue about our race. It'd be pretty cool to see a movie we can relate to. We are kind of like Cameron Diaz's mom and stepdad in There's Something About Mary.
