Why do you think the author stays completely away from Denzel Washington in this whole discussion (except for when discussing "The Hurricane")?

He mentions him when discussing his 5th prejudice that they still can't show a black man dating a white woman. In the Pelican Brief the movie is altered so that Denzel and Julia Roberts don't actually have sex.

 

As for your point, I'm going to have to think a little harder on Denzel's filmography. At first glance I thought he fit into the Will Smith mold, but some of this blockbuster leads were about race relations. i.e. Remember The Titans so I'm going to have to do some IMDB searching.

 

Any thoughts on #5? I'm struggling to think of anytime a black man dated a white woman when it wasn't specifically about that. I defnitely believe the prejudice exists, but it's pretty surprising that I can't think of one example that goes against the grain.

I disagree with #1. There is a lot of history written about well-developed civilizations that does is virtually exclusive of white people - look at China and Japan. To say "we still don't care about" history from those civilizations is completely obtuse. I personally know several history buffs who would disagree entirely.

 

Now as for Europe and North America...I think much of the history written previous to the second half of the 19th century and later does not include many races other than white because of slavery and oppression. It's not secret that blacks were kept oppressed and whites tried to prevent them from being educated. There was little history written about black people because the white-Anglo community certainly wasn't writing about them, and they generally couldn't write about their history themselves (and certainly couldn't get it published if they could), and let's face it, given their plight, a large majority of the blacks in Europe and North America were simply doing what they could to get by. The idea of having the time, ability, or even really the subject matter to write about just wasn't there. So, specific to North America and Europe, is it a lack of interest in the history of non-white races, or is it a lack of history documented about them?

Is it weird that the first movie to pop into my head after reading No. 4 was "Predator 2?" Then I looked it up and it finished 38th in 1990. Meh.

 

Still a great movie and the opening 10 minutes of that movie could be watched over and over again. What a great portrait of how Hollywood viewed the city around it in the early 90s.

The article is specifically addressing this in the cinematic world. Not in academia.

I'm not entirely sure what constitutes a blockbuster but Denzel Washington has a ton of great movies.

 

How about Crimson Tide, when he beats out the white man?

One I'd add is genre specific....In horror movies, the black guy is almost always the first to die.
