Garrard had the ball first and punter and Russell drove all the way to the 4 yard line. The Devils ran four plays from inside the 5 (with the 4th down play coming from the 1) and Garrard held. That completely put the momentum in Garrard County's favor. After that the Lions were dominant. Garrard led 34-6 at the half and the coaching staff seemed content to grind it out in the second half. I believe the staff was working on some things for next week because the offense could easily have spread out and put a couple more scores up.

 

Garrard defense was terrific all evening with exception of one drive where Russell drove 70 yards on nothing but fullback up the middle plays. But after a few adjustments that play didn't work any more. I don't know officially, but Russell couldn't have had much more than 200 yards offense.

 

Offensively for Garrard, I unofficially heard that senior running back Markell Hayes had 197 yards on 10 carries, including two 66-yard touchdown runs. Senior back Cory Wilson also had a solid night, scoring twice, and working hard to generate the tough yards against a strong Russell interior line.

 

Off to next week where Garrard will host Powell County. The Lions defeated the Pirates in Lancaster by a score of 57-27 several weeks ago, but Powell seems to be playing much better. It should be a very good regional final.

Garrard has been to the regional finals three times and lost all three. They lost in 1967, 26-20 to Bardstown in overtime. They fell to Bardstown again in 1993 by a score of 14-13. And two years later in 1995 they were defeated by Harrodsburg, 14-6.

They are. And this was expected by most in the community this season. The junior class, which is most of the linemen and the quarterback, were middle school conference champions as 8th graders (defeating Danville, Boyle, Lincoln, Rockcastle) and the senior class, while not large, is where nearly all of the skill-players are. Most had been looking to this season as one where Garrard could make a run. It's been nice to see it come to fruition.

Congradulations to Coach Scenters and staff and the rest of the Lions crew on a very successful season. Now its time to bring a Regional Championship back to Lancaster.

The coaches from our area that I talked to were really impressed with Garrard this year. Outstanding year for their program.
