Top 5 reasons why Football is the greatest sport...and why they are all WRONG!

Featured Replies

The two most popular sports in America have become pro football and college football. That is not disputable. The real question is why is football so much more popular than baseball which no person watches. I am not typing this as necessarily what I feel, but what I believe the casual fan sees.

- The "action" debate is laughable. I think those who prefer baseball will even admit in a private moment that the "action" which take place in a baseball game is something that must be appreciated with every pitch and not necessarily "action" in most people's eyes. 90% of plays (from pitch to the next pitch) is largely uneventful. Every football play most guys on the field have an important role and are doing something physical. From being a kid on up it is just a lot more exciting.

- To the masses football is a lot better television sport. Ratings support this. More people watched last season's Tennessee/Jacksonville meaningless Monday night football game than the World Series and it was not even close. That is sad. Arguably baseball's two biggest pitchers (C.C. and Verlander) were doubled up in the ratings to whoever was playing football that night. Heck, the football off-season has become more newsworthy than baseball. How football is structured with a week in between games and multiple story lines of injuries and controversy simply make it more interesting to the casual guy. It is a reality show which people get to see unfold every week. During the week we are told of stories and other behind the scenes action which lead up to the games. There are no developing story lines in baseball.

Sorry, but I'm not conceding the action debate as laughable. For one there isn't much action in football, period. What action there is I find to be idiotic or boring and I'm not just saying that for the purposes of this thread. I would rather watch almost any other sport besides football---hell the main reason I watched football for so long to begin with was either my roommates outvoted me or I wanted to win at fantasy. But if all of my friends were playing fantasy bass fishing I'd probably give that a shot and watch. I simply like playing fantasy sports with friends. The only major sports I find to be more boring than football are NASCAR and soccer.

I will say that for the casual fan however; football does seem to be much easier to follow and keep up with. Seems to be the American way which probably explains it's popularity.

1. In Texas, they say that the two biggest sports are football and spring football.

2. No question that C.C. is one of the two "biggest" pitchers in baseball.

I will say in regards to the action argument....in football during the 5-8 seconds of action each play takes to complete that there is a lot going on all over the field. It is impossible to catch everything that happens in one play. That fact is another aspect to the action argument. There is literally so much action in any given play that you can't see it all and one reason why I prefer watching football in high definition on television instead of at the game.

Again, you are answering this from YOUR view and trying to break down the "action" debate from a baseball purist standpoint. I was simply trying to address why I believe football is king in other people's eyes. Go take a poll from casual fans and ask which one has more "action", football would easily win and you know it.

Kyfootball

Did you play football? The reason i ask is because you stated you wrestled at 103lb. Most 100lb guys i knew in high school did not play football. My thought process makes me think that could play in to your feelings towards the sport.

For what it's worth...i think wrestling is one of the most physically demanding sports, having both wrestled and played football. But you will not win this arguement about football not being the top sport.

Also, soccer is the most played sport at the youth levels.

I have never once said that football wouldn't win in a poll. I also don't think just because the majority likes it that means it's true. Also the action debate from the other side is THEIR view and broken down from a football junkie's standpoint...goes both ways.

Besides baseball, I also really enjoy watching basketball and MMA. Love the Olympics. Watch and coach amateur wrestling. Have really gotten into watching triathlons. I can be talked into watching the majors of tennis and golf. Ryder Cup was amazing live and is fun to watch on TV. So I am not going at this from a baseball vs football aspect as I thought my mention of many other sports in this thread would make clear. :idunno:

There are threads right now with people talking about how horrible soccer is, how Christmas is the worst holiday, whether playing UDayton will be the cure for a losing streak in football, how boring baseball is...

Not going to lie... I'm feeling a little put upon this week...

Yep, I played through middle school and did enjoy my time playing. Once I entered high school I decided to focus on other things. For what it's worth...I cut a lot.

My argument isn't that it's not the top sport.

What is the definition of athelete. You take a runner that can run a mile in record speed but will more than likely loose to the half back who runs the 40 in 4.3 seconds. Each sport has its on training requirements and only a few persons can cross over in 2 or more sports. All these are good atheletes in there on right but none is better than the other. You are right only 11 minutes in football but it is the best 11 minutes there is.

For you.

I am very serious with the thread.

Just don't take it personal. FWIW, I like to play soccer( can't watch it and glad my kids never played) and always had fun playing backyard soccer games as a kid. I love playing baseball/softball more than any other sport(can't watch it either but I wish my kids played for their school), I love Christmas, and Dayton would whip UK in football.

Better athletes to me in no particular order:

1. Triathletes

2. Wrestlers

3. MMA fighters

4. Swimmers

5. Basketball players

6. Soccer players

That's off the top of my head.

Your way off base, Football players if dedicated to one of these other sports would dominate NFL level athletes that is, very few of them could enter the NFL and succeed... NFL has guys who simply run faster, jump higher, change direction quicker add in the reaction time and hitting no comparison.
