Top 5 reasons why Football is the greatest sport...and why they are all WRONG!

Featured Replies

I've already refuted this argument. Unless your definition of "action" is watching commercials, guys standing around and the same play over and over again.

You misread my sentence. I said I love the action. I never said there was more.

And no, even if football has the greatest athletes it doesn't mean it is the greatest sport. As stated, my personal preference is basketball. How can any sport be better than basketball?

Not him, specifically, but you can go to any team and pull at least 25 guys off of each team that could compete at those sports you mentioned. Tons of former D-1 college basketball players playing in the NFL. Ochocinco played soccer. There's no telling how many could wrestle or fight MMA...(Herschel Walker is right now at age 83). With proper training I think there are a lot of players who could compete at those sports you mentioned.
Ochocinco made a camp in a lesser league as a sideshow. I would use those D-1 college basketball players as an argument that basketball players are more athletic. Herschel Walker is fighting guys who can't even get their own Wikipedia page. TUF had a season where several former football players tried out. I think only one has been very successful outside of the show.

I actually remember the first few days the football players showed up to wrestling practice every year, they usually threw up and had to take multiple breaks. These are guys who have been practicing football since the summer. The rest of us had been in wrestling practice for six weeks.

Fair enough. That's a lot of dead time for a little bit of action though.

You aren't going to get me to hate on basketball. I like it, prefer others more but it's definitely worthy of being in the conversation.
These are the most common reasons I hear on why football is GREAT!

1. There is more action - One of the biggest misconceptions out there. In all reality there is only 11 minutes of "action" in your average NFL game. So you action-junkies need to hang your hat somewhere else.

2. Fantasy football - Compared to any other fantasy sport none is so dependent on luck than football. The weekly head-to-head format lends itself to a system where the best doesn't prevail. Picking the winners of the football games itself doesn't require knowing anything about the teams to be successful either (click here for proof). All of the fantasy football junkies I know who try to play baseball/basketball finish at the bottom. This isn't even touching on the new phenomena of having to hear about how you "barely lost" this week and if it wasn't for that 3rd-string RB it would have been yours. Finally, nothing is worse than being in a bar with the people cheering for someone on EVERY team playing.

3. Tailgating - I like to grill out, play cornhole and drink beer just as much as the next guy. I also like to do it somewhere besides a vast patch of asphalt...

4. It's macho/masculine/a manly sport -I have never understood this. Running full speed at each other in helmets and pads isn't very "manly" to me. It's just idiotic and in a lot of cases equates to debilitating injuries later in life. If you want macho then watch an MMA fight, which is something most "football junkies" are opposed to.

5. The Superbowl - There are generally considered to be 4 major professional team sports in North America (I said 4 and not 3 for Getslow). Every other sport decides it's champion in a best-of-seven series (guessing on hockey), but football chooses to use the foolish concept of crowning a champion based on one game. Putting that aside, the game itself and all the surrounding hoopla is overrated. For starters, if I want to go to a Superbowl party I either have to A) get off work, B) not drink, or C) be hungover at work because it is foolishly on a Monday. Nothing is going on that Saturday, so move it back. Half of the watchers are only watching for the commercials---yep, it's gotten so ridiculous that "the commercials" take precedence over the actual game for many people. Superbowl parties themselves are overrated because you have 50% of the people who can't tell a touchdown from a homerun and just wanna see the aforementioned commercials.

So there, that's why football is so great! Just for RTS. :D

1. If there's only 11 minutes of action in football, then by contrast there's probably only like a minute and a half of action in baseball. Real action, not the time spent waiting around for the pitcher to start the action playing toss with the catcher, I mean actual time where something is happening.

2. Who cares about fantasy anything? Give me the real deal!

3. Do people even tailgate for baseball? If so, it would tons more exciting than the game.

4. Compared to baseball, it's EXTREMELY manly. Yeah, sure, an MMA fight is more manly, but baseball is NO comparison. BTW, I like MMA fights, personally.

5. Say what you will about the Superbowl, but every year it beats out the other 3 major professional team sports in North America including the ho hum World Series. Every year.

Love it fkyw. That fat guy isn't a great athlete. I don't see great athletes, I simply see freaks.

As for the "action". Football is a "broad" focus sport. For entertainment purposes...and those with ADHD...it works. Baseball is more of a "fine" focus sport. Pitch by pitch a baseball game has a TON of action.

For me, there's nothing better than a 3-2 game in the 1st game of the WS. Only thing better would've been if St Louis lost.

Triathletes??? Swimming???

We aren't asking who is the best at exercising.

I'm not sure many would disagree with basketball players being better athletes. But I would take football players over any of the rest of your list. Lets look at MMA...Lesnar is regarded as one of the best heavyweights and if you recall he tried out for the Vikings and didn't make it out of preseason before being cut. Most top level MMA guys have been doing it for most of thier life. How good do you think alot of pro football players would be if they trained at MMA for most of their lives? Let's look at soccer, there is a reason the US will never be a real threat on an international level in soccer. The majority of the top US athletes play basketball or football.

Check out this great athlete. :D

We need to start one of these on baseball.

Since we have the tread for it now, I'll repost this:

Reasons football is better than baseball:

Baseball fans fill out box scores in their programs or play backgammon to keep themselves busy awake.

Your grandmother likes baseball and she knits at the game.

An outfielder can chat with fans and give them high fives during play. Yeah, it's a tough game.

Marching bands or Cheerleaders vs. an old lady hitting three keys on a church organ...are you kidding me?

A Walter Payton highlight film.

No football game was ever halted by an invasion of flying insects.

No five-hour games. Other than pitching purists, who really enjoys an 18-inning 2-1 game?

Football players don't mind getting dirty. Baseball players start wiping off their uniforms as soon as they hit the dirt.

In bad weather, football players suffer along with the fans. Baseball players duck into the dugout or dry off in the clubhouse.

And number one....You can't throw snowballs at umpires.
