Top 5 reasons why Football is the greatest sport...and why they are all WRONG!

Featured Replies

These are the most common reasons I hear on why football is GREAT!

1. There is more action - One of the biggest misconceptions out there. In all reality there is only 11 minutes of "action" in your average NFL game. So you action-junkies need to hang your hat somewhere else.

2. Fantasy football - Compared to any other fantasy sport none is so dependent on luck than football. The weekly head-to-head format lends itself to a system where the best doesn't prevail. Picking the winners of the football games itself doesn't require knowing anything about the teams to be successful either (click here for proof). All of the fantasy football junkies I know who try to play baseball/basketball finish at the bottom. This isn't even touching on the new phenomena of having to hear about how you "barely lost" this week and if it wasn't for that 3rd-string RB it would have been yours. Finally, nothing is worse than being in a bar with the people cheering for someone on EVERY team playing.

3. Tailgating - I like to grill out, play cornhole and drink beer just as much as the next guy. I also like to do it somewhere besides a vast patch of asphalt...

4. It's macho/masculine/a manly sport -I have never understood this. Running full speed at each other in helmets and pads isn't very "manly" to me. It's just idiotic and in a lot of cases equates to debilitating injuries later in life. If you want macho then watch an MMA fight, which is something most "football junkies" are opposed to.

5. The Superbowl - There are generally considered to be 4 major professional team sports in North America (I said 4 and not 3 for Getslow). Every other sport decides it's champion in a best-of-seven series (guessing on hockey), but football chooses to use the foolish concept of crowning a champion based on one game. Putting that aside, the game itself and all the surrounding hoopla is overrated. For starters, if I want to go to a Superbowl party I either have to A) get off work, B) not drink, or C) be hungover at work because it is foolishly on a Monday. Nothing is going on that Saturday, so move it back. Half of the watchers are only watching for the commercials---yep, it's gotten so ridiculous that "the commercials" take precedence over the actual game for many people. Superbowl parties themselves are overrated because you have 50% of the people who can't tell a touchdown from a homerun and just wanna see the aforementioned commercials.

So there, that's why football is so great! Just for RTS. :D

6. The BCS - Short of drawing names out of a hat, I can't think of a worse way to determine a national championship.

Football is probably the most entertaining sport to watch. In my opinion, football players are the greatest athletes on the planet. I love the action in football and while basketball is my own personal favorite sport overall.....football is second.

Other notes.....

I can play some fantasy baseball as long as I personally draft my team. It's not hard.

The BCS is garbage but when cash rules everything around me it is what we end up with. The BCS does get it right more than it gets it wrong though. I'd still rather have playoffs.

I turned on the World Series last night....at 10:53....because nothing else was on to fill my time until Family Guy came on Cartoon Network at 11:00. Baseball was a whole lot better when they let them juice. 3-2 Cardinal victory in game one.....exhilarating.

I would say the number one reason Football is popular is the gambling. And I agree Superbowl and NCAA basketball finals need to be on a Saturday night. I have to take the Monday after Superbowl every year.

Better athletes to me in no particular order:

1. Triathletes

2. Wrestlers

3. MMA fighters

4. Swimmers

5. Basketball players

6. Soccer players

That's off the top of my head.

I know why but that doesn't make it a good thing.

And I meant to put Sunday, not Monday. My bad.

It's debatable. For me, the athleticism of the defensive lineman and offensive lineman puts it over the top for me. I'd love to see the 350 pounder more athletic than Vince Wilfork. There is no doubt in my mind that a large percentage of football players could compete in all of those sports you mentioned if they trained for those sports as hard as the pros in those sports do.

I would say basketball players are your best athletes. JMO

Check out this great athlete. :D

That's my point. That dude is fatter than a lot of people and still faster and quicker than 99% of people his size. You're talking about massive men moving at speeds that are stupid considering their size. Imagine if that dude weighed the amount he should weigh.

This is always a curious topic for me... How do you define athleticism?

That doesn't make him a good athlete. And definitely doesn't mean he could compete at any of the sports I mentioned.

Even if football has the best athletes, would that mean it was the greatest sport?

I've already refuted this argument. Unless your definition of "action" is watching commercials, guys standing around and the same play over and over again.

Not him, specifically, but you can go to any team and pull at least 25 guys off of each team that could compete at those sports you mentioned. Tons of former D-1 college basketball players playing in the NFL. Ochocinco played soccer. There's no telling how many could wrestle or fight MMA...(Herschel Walker is right now at age 83). With proper training I think there are a lot of players who could compete at those sports you mentioned.
