Top 5 reasons why Football is the greatest sport...and why they are all WRONG!

Featured Replies

^ Based on recent developments, I'll add this one.

Football players don't smoke and drink beer on the sidelines (analagous to the baseball dugout).

Since we have the tread for it now, I'll repost this:

Reasons football is better than baseball:

Baseball fans fill out box scores in their programs or play backgammon to keep themselves busy awake. Football fans have to drink to enjoy it. (tailgate)

Your grandmother likes baseball and she knits at the game. Knitting scarves for the weak, like the KY football coaches who don't want spring practice in March because it's too cold. Which, by the way, is baseball season.

An outfielder can chat with fans and give them high fives during play. Yeah, it's a tough game. 1 word...KICKER

Marching bands or Cheerleaders vs. an old lady hitting three keys on a church organ...are you kidding me? Really? Marching bands and cheerleaders is your argument? You can count on one hand the # of people that go to a game to see those two groups of people, not including their parents, of course.

A Walter Payton highlight film. Agreed

No football game was ever halted by an invasion of flying insects. No but if the turf isn't perfect you can't play.

No five-hour games. Other than pitching purists, who really enjoys an 18-inning 2-1 game? Every pitch matters

Football players don't mind getting dirty. Baseball players start wiping off their uniforms as soon as they hit the dirt. Considering more than 50% of the football fields are now turf?

In bad weather, football players suffer along with the fans. Baseball players duck into the dugout or dry off in the clubhouse. Football players don't have heaters for their helmets, shoes, hands...etc?

And number one....You can't throw snowballs at umpires. No, but you have bats!

My reply in bold.

I'm not sure many would disagree with basketball players being better athletes. But I would take football players over any of the rest of your list. Lets look at MMA...Lesnar is regarded as one of the best heavyweights and if you recall he tried out for the Vikings and didn't make it out of preseason before being cut. Most top level MMA guys have been doing it for most of thier life. How good do you think alot of pro football players would be if they trained at MMA for most of their lives? Let's look at soccer, there is a reason the US will never be a real threat on an international level in soccer. The majority of the top US athletes play basketball or football.
Fair enough on Lesnar trying out for the Vikings. But Lesnar would also destroy any football player in the octagon. Could seriously kill them.

Ask anyone here who wrestled at a good program. Football players STRUGGLED during wrestling practice until they got whipped into wrestling shape.

There is also a reason football hasn't spread anywhere else...it's not a very good game.

1. If there's only 11 minutes of action in football, then by contrast there's probably only like a minute and a half of action in baseball. Real action, not the time spent waiting around for the pitcher to start the action playing toss with the catcher, I mean actual time where something is happening.

2. Who cares about fantasy anything? Give me the real deal!

3. Do people even tailgate for baseball? If so, it would tons more exciting than the game.

4. Compared to baseball, it's EXTREMELY manly. Yeah, sure, an MMA fight is more manly, but baseball is NO comparison. BTW, I like MMA fights, personally.

5. Say what you will about the Superbowl, but every year it beats out the other 3 major professional team sports in North America including the ho hum World Series. Every year.

1. There is a ton more of action when the ball is in play. Twist it around however you want but the facts remain.

2. You may not but I think a ton of your football loving brethren would strongly disagree. You inspired this thread but aren't the main focus.

3. They don't to my knowledge but as I said...I'd rather do the tailgating activities somewhere besides a vacant lot.

4. I still claim it's idiotic. Though if you want your "manly" I'm sure baseball players will keep the ability to speak and walk.

5. A common BGP theme is that, "just because a lot of people like it doesn't mean it's good".

We need to start one of these on baseball.

We would all go to sleep before the 5th post was made.

Bingo...triathletes are freaks in their own right but most of it is their endurance levels.
And that isn't athletic? I'm speaking on the pro level by the way.
Better athletes to me in no particular order:

1. Triathletes

2. Wrestlers

3. MMA fighters

4. Swimmers

5. Basketball players

6. Soccer players

That's off the top of my head.

Agreed.

I would put fighters (MMA, Boxers, wrestlers) as the top athletes.

I know this isn't considered 'manly' but dancers as athletes are in my top tier. Make fun, but its the truth.

Bet he has more stamina then your average Major League 1st baseman. :D
It's hard to tell. A lineman is only active for roughly 5.5 minutes in the span of three hours. :D

For the record, I have not said ANYWHERE that baseball players are far superior athletes to football players. I also don't think having the best athletes qualifies a sport as the best sport.

I think watching college basketball and amateur boxing are the two most exciting, for me.

I wrestled at a very average program.

Best football player in my graduating class (played 9 years in the NFL) tried out for wrestling on a whim his senior year.

Didn't last a week.

But football is by far and away my favorite sport.

5. A common BGP theme is that, "just because a lot of people like it doesn't mean it's good".

1. Prove it.

2. That's fine, but to me it's not an issue.

3. You can. It's up to you where you party.

4. No doubt football is a violent sport.

5. If we were talking about music I'd agree. But sports, no so much.

It's hard to tell. A lineman is only active for roughly 5.5 minutes in the span of three hours. :D

Which is about 4.2 minutes more active than a 1st baseman through about a 5 hour span.

Folks used to try to tell me that race car drivers were great athletes because they sweated off so much water weight during a race.

My reply was that I could fall asleep in a sauna for a couple of hours and do the same thing.
