Top 5 reasons why Football is the greatest sport...and why they are all WRONG!

Featured Replies

In all honesty I never intended this thread this thread to be about who has the better athletes. But I did a pretty good job of getting it there.

I agree on the unique aspects to each sport and that's why I watch so many different sports.

Sorry...11 minutes of action argument isn't stupid. If someone tells me football is packed with action and I can point out that in that three hours or so there are only 11 minutes of what qualifies as "action" then I think it's a very fair point. Anyone who thinks differently I say is thinking foolishly or just doesn't want to acknowledge something that makes a key portion of an argument null and void...

I just mainly get tired of hearing from everyone that football is the greatest thing ever.

I have no problem with your opinion that football isn't good. So, tell me what is. What should I watch in its place and why is it better? I'm still waiting for you to tell me what is better and why.

How often do you encounter people telling you how great football is from day to day?

We must not be reading the same thread. I have given multiple options of what is better. Concerning the why...let's start with they aren't boring.

True story.

I had a roommate in college from a wide place in the road called Omaha in Knott County. Great guy. We both started in the fall of 1973 at Morehead. By the time he was my roomie in the fall of 1977, I was a graduate student and he was a fifth-year sophomore. He was a HUGE UK basketball and NY Yankees baseball fan (it's been my experience that there are a lot of those out there). Didn't care for football. Even with that glaring character defect, we got on famously. Lived in a trailer out in Clearfield. Terrible winter - we had no water for five weeks at one stretch. Lots of yellow snow. All true.

Late winter of 1978 we had a long weekend - President's Day, I think. We drove to my home in the suburbs of Baltimore. I asked him if he would like to go to the county wrestling tournament (Anne Arundel County is fairly populous, lots of fairly large schools where I grew up, my graduating class was 649). The only wrestling he had ever seen to that point involved Hungarian Lip Locks, Flying Leg Kicks, etc.).

Anyway, we went to the first round of the tournament. He was astonished, he was hooked, he loved it. Loved it so much that he insisted that we go back the next night for the second round matches rather than go bar-hopping. Believe me when I tell you that demonstrated just how into the wrestling matches he was - an opportunity to go bar-hopping on the weekend in Baltimore is not something that he would have turned down without something extraordinarily compelling to take its place. That and his status as a fifth-year sophomore were in my mind, at least indirectly related.

Of course, what he loved was the one-on-one competition. That's what is so appealing about amateur wrestling to those of us that participated. You against one other guy. Yes, there was a team aspect, and the team won or lost as a result of the individual matches; but it was first and foremost an individual test of strength, skill and endurance.

And I forget what my point was going to be.irked.gif

Does he still watch wrestling?
Does he still watch wrestling?

No idea, unfortunately. I lost contact with him shortly after college.

Sorry, I've read a bunch of posts where you trash football, a few back and forths with RTS where you guys defend football and baseball, and a few where you try to list sports whose participants are better athletes.

I see next to nothing where you break down a specific sport that is better than football and tell us why.

They aren't boring. That pretty much covers it I believe. But, just for clarity's sake, could you tell me which sports aren't boring or is it safe to assume that all but NASCAR and football are in the "aren't boring" classification?

I like baseball, hockey, and college basketball, but I love football. For this discussion, I equate baseball much more with a chess match. Football is a war.

I hear you and I'm not arguing, but I don't think that is true in reality.

If you ask me what I like about football, it is the chess match. Football is infinitely more complex and cerebral than baseball. I enjoy the strategy and game planning aspect of football as much as the action itself. I love watching defenses try to confuse elite QB's and in turn watching Brady and Rodgers manipulate matchups, read defenses and try to beat them with the right decision. I enjoy seeing what kind of game plans and schemes a team will use on any given week to exploit an opponent.

You've got 22 guys on the field, 11 chess pieces for each coach if you will.

I just don't see baseball as that complex. If the game is tied with two outs and men on second and third with Albert Pujols coming, I walk him to avoid the best hitter and create force outs at every base. Maybe I bring in a lefty to face Lance Berkman.

If the bases are loaded with no outs in the bottom of the ninth in a tie game, I bring the infield and outfield in because a run beats me. The guy at third is all that matters...there's no point in the outfield playing deep because a sac fly beats me. :idunno:

If you ask me the one thing I like most about football, it is the strategy and game planning that is involved. So, for some, maybe the ball being in play for 11 minutes bothers them. It is irrelevant to me because a huge part of the game takes place in the time between.

I don't require "action" to enjoy a sport. Baseball doesn't feature a lot of action, but I like it as well. I like baseball because it creates and sustains tension better than any other sport. To me, the best moments are when a pitcher is trying to get out of a jam and everything slows down. He takes longer between pitches, he throws to first more often, etc. It seems like the world hangs on every pitch until he gets out of it or the opponent breaks through with a big hit to score some run.

That's just me.

5wide,

I didn't start the thread for me to break down every sport I like better than football and why I do. I'm currently away from my computer and will be for awhile. If I have time I will try to give you the breakdown for a few sports. Though I find your method of requesting to be off-putting and so far it seems you don't intend to address the things I said in my original post (wel you did call one stupid). I guess I forgot the golden rule, "thou shall not speak ill of football".

I get it. You find football to be a boring sport and you don't like it. I don't mind.

I was just curious as to what specifically you like and find entertaining about other sports versus what you dislike and find boring about football. I get NASCAR - 4 hours of cars driving in circles with a handful of tire changes sprinkled in. I've found nothing better to aid in my attempts to take a Sunday afternoon nap.

Seriously, NASCAR in the afternoon and ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. During the winter, I need Ambien to sleep on Sundays.

I apologize if I was off-putting as that wasn't my intention. I find this thread to be pretty interesting. Perhaps I should have worded my posts differently or added a smiley or two. In any case, I'm sorry for offending you.

And, there's a reasonable chance that I won't be back on here until Monday, so you've got all weekend to respond should you choose to do so. :D

Sorry, but I'm not conceding the action debate as laughable. For one there isn't much action in football, period. What action there is I find to be idiotic or boring and I'm not just saying that for the purposes of this thread. I would rather watch almost any other sport besides football---hell the main reason I watched football for so long to begin with was either my roommates outvoted me or I wanted to win at fantasy. But if all of my friends were playing fantasy bass fishing I'd probably give that a shot and watch. I simply like playing fantasy sports with friends. The only major sports I find to be more boring than football are NASCAR and soccer.

I will say that for the casual fan however; football does seem to be much easier to follow and keep up with. Seems to be the American way which probably explains it's popularity.

So this thread basically boils down to you hate football but don't really have any other argument besides you hate football.
I'm not sure if you are serious or not. I don't know enough about either Supercross/Motocross or you to decipher it.

Yes, I'm totally serious. So many sports that a lot of us don't know, makes it tough, me included. Believe me, those guys are extremely talented, tough, athletic and in tremendous condition it's unreal.

I would say men gymnasts are very good athletes too, but I sure do not want to watch. To each his own I guess.

I hear you and I'm not arguing, but I don't think that is true in reality.

To me a chess match between 2 people is akin to the real art of baseball, the struggle between the pitcher and the batter. By the same token, I look at the game planning and strategy of football much the same as I do the planning of a battle or operation between 2 armies, a war. It's just semantics, really.

I loathed high school. Beyond what you guys could possibly imagine.

I begged my parents daily to send me to a school that didn't suck balls. It didn't happen.

I've given several reasons. If you can't find them then I can't help you...

Though I started this with why I hear football is so great and why I disagree with those reasons. But now I've discovered that if you make a disparaging mark about football people tend to get very upset.
