I get it. You find football to be a boring sport and you don't like it. I don't mind.

 

I was just curious as to what specifically you like and find entertaining about other sports versus what you dislike and find boring about football. I get NASCAR - 4 hours of cars driving in circles with a handful of tire changes sprinkled in. I've found nothing better to aid in my attempts to take a Sunday afternoon nap.

 

Seriously, NASCAR in the afternoon and ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. During the winter, I need Ambien to sleep on Sundays. :lol:

I've given several reasons. If you can't find them then I can't help you...

 

Though I started this with why I hear football is so great and why I disagree with those reasons. But now I've discovered that if you make a disparaging mark about football people tend to get very upset. :lol:

I saw your reasons and then after counter points it boiled down to you think it is idiotic and boring. That's ok, nothing wrong with that and no one is upset, just pointing out the errors in your thinking.

Football is my favorite, though I enjoy basketball quite a bit. Unfortunately, baseball puts me to sleep.

 

I am perplexed at the comment that football is easier to understand than baseball. There are so many plays, offensive and defensive schemes, rules, etc, that I can't imagine someone understanding the whole game easily, without years of study, which is what happens as kids play youth league, ms and HS football, watch college and NFL.

 

I am also perplexed about the comment on the amount of action in a football game. In any given play, so much goes on that it is impossible to take it all in. As someone that keeps stats for a HS team, I have to go back and watch film to truly see the game. As the ball is snapped, which linemen fire off the line best? As the back is running, who is blocking for him? Which pass routes are receivers running? I never get to even consider the defense and what happens there, beyond seeing who makes the tackle or pass breakup.

 

Once the ball is snapped, 22 guys are each doing a job crucial to the success of the play. The same cannot be said of baseball. If there is a hit to right field, does the left fielder even need to move? I've has HS outfielders that loved the game tell me that the most exciting thing they did at a game was to count dandelions. When you are on the field for football, ever play requirers you to do a job.

 

I am not offended by those that don't enjoy football, as I hope others aren't offended that I don't enjoy baseball and golf. I love football enough for five or six people.

I gave plenty. I think you are reading a different thread than me. Other than 5wide's great breakdown on the strategy/chess match I'm actually not really seeing much from the pro-football crowd besides the "action" is great, best athletes, and it's popular...all of which I've tried to point out the problems with. So where are the "errors in thinking"?

To me a chess match between 2 people is akin to the real art of baseball, the struggle between the pitcher and the batter. By the same token, I look at the game planning and strategy of football much the same as I do the planning of a battle or operation between 2 armies, a war. It's just semantics, really.

I can certainly buy that. I like that line of thinking. When I saw war, I was only thinking of the mindless, barbaric killing, not the actual planning that goes into a battle. Obviously, I misunderstood your intent.

It is. It has made me really think about the sports I enjoy watching, what makes them unique, and what is specifically appealing to me from each one.
