I have no idea what the KHSAA is thinking with who is eligble, and who isn't.

 

The kid lived in Buffalo and moved here, how do you question a legal change of address? We've certainly had plenty of transfers recently in NKY where change of residence would be a lot less unlikely and motives also questionable, yet the kids were okay to play.

 

That said, I'm not sure how a kid goes from Buffalo to Perry County, Ky.?

This one has me a little puzzled. The kid moved to Kentucky from out of state so it hard to see anything there that would make him ineligible. Is there something in the move that is unusual? Did his whole family move to Kentucky? What is the specific reason he is ineligible?

I have heard there was a misunderstanding on the transfer paper that needs to be taken care of with guardianship. He is now living with his mom.

I heard that he tried to go to Logan, WV but he could not play there due to not having enough or correct academic credits. That may be the same problem here in KY. I believe there is a connection between the coaching staff at Logan, WV and Perry Co Central.

I heard what Goldie heard. I did hear some rumblings about his grades but was told his grades were fine and he will graduate on time. Plus, has the KHSAA ever ruled anyone ineligible for grades? Wouldn't that be overstepping their boundaries? I know of plenty of kids with horrendous grades who were still eligible or at least they still played. Can the KHSAA make eligibility determinations based on grades?

Wouldn't think so, but PCC's head coach's son is the head coach at Logan High School in WV, and that was what I told was the reason he didn't go to Logan H.S. and ended up at PCC.

The KHSAA sets a minimum requirement on schools to enforce that each student athlete pass a certain percentage of their classes. Weekly grade checks are done by school administration. Part of this could be academic or maybe there were some mistakes when filing the paperwork. There are only certain stipulations the KHSAA requires. There are so many mistakes that could have been made in this case. As for people getting jobs at Toyota trust me it happens. Don't want to say certain names on here but it is a fact. Especially in the mid to late 90's when coaching changes were made and players were drawn from the area the coach previously coached.

Just saying, if he had went to Scott County or Trinity, he would have been eligible with NO questions asked..... Period....

 

When Tanner Shotwell transferred back to Scott County from LCA a few years ago, he was ruled ineligible and had to sit out a year. Same thing with Darryl Hicks to Trinity. No change of address.

 

Let's not make a blanket statement that some schools get special treatment.

 

I am sure this case is a mere formality to get him ruled eligible. If the paperwork was incorrect or insufficient, don't blame the KHSAA. Blame those who turned in the paperwork.

 

Let's be honest about the entire transfer situation. Until there is a rule that simply states no matter the circumstance a kid has to sit out a year, every year kids will move schools. And, people will assume there must be something up with the situation. It's not a perfect system and never will be.

Bylaw 6, Section 3, Part (a) will give you your answer to the grades question. Yes, a player's grades can be a factor in denying eligibility. If the player would have been declared academically ineligible at their old school due to grades, they may be denied eligibility at their new one. See below:

Satisfying of one of the exceptions (Section 2, a through i) shall not be considered valid and a waiver of the period of ineligibility shall not be granted:

representatives or rules of the previous school or if the student left the sending school under penalty which would have resulted in the student’s ineligibility at the sending school;

 

Not saying that this is the situation involved here, but yes, as a general rule, grades can play a factor.

I heard (and it is just hearsay) that the mom had transferred custody to his uncle when he moved to play in Staten Island NYC, and when she moved to Perry County she didn't change the custody status before the move. Probably an oversight on her part. But being the biological mother I wouldn't think this would be a major roadblock for him being ruled eligible. My guess is he will be ruled eligible with the appeal.

Ok, all of those arguments are fine, but still NOBODY has answered my question.... Has anyone checked to see who is footing the bill at Trinity for Hicks? Just a simple question, I understand that he had to sit out a year because of the transfer rule and his parents still live in Shelby County I believe, but who is paying for his school bill at Trinity? I guess we don't care, but it could be a major implication when he goes to college and they wonder how he could afford attend a private school.....
