October 8, 201115 yr Does anyone else see the double standard? People on the left demonized, ridiculed and would just spare no mercy in criticizing the Tea Party. Now the people on the right are doing the exact same thing with the occupy Wall Street protesters. Reasons behind Occupy Wall Street:social and economic inequality, corporate greed, and the influence of corporate money and lobbyists on government. Reasons for Tea Party: reduced government spending, opposition to taxation in varying degrees, reduction of the national debt and federal budget deficit. These are all good reasons as to start a protest and bring issues that are ruining America to the table IMO I am not a member of the Tea Party but I understand where they are coming from. I am not a member or the Wall Street Protesters but I understand where they are coming from. I can see areas from both sides that I agree with and areas from both that I disagree with. Does anyone not like one side but likes the other? Or do you see good and bad from both?
October 8, 201115 yr I can see both sides as well, and like you have some things I agree and others I disagree with with both. I will say this...I'm NOT a fan of extremism in any way, shape or form. Both goups you mention are among the extremes. I do agree they bring attention to the issues though. And frankly, if both can galvanize the lazy, non-voting, non engaged citizen in America to take action by voting or being involved in solving their community's issues, it's a good thing. Whatever the impetus, Americans need to quit complaining and looking to everyone else and finger pointing while watching CNBC, FoxNews, etc. Get involved and make a difference.
October 8, 201115 yr I see good and bad from both. I have no problem with either, really, but I've heard of more arrests made with the Occupy Wall Street crowd. Not sure why that is, but I think overall, both sides are fed up with the way things are.
October 9, 201115 yr The Wall Street Crowd could be included in the thread about Obama's statement about Americans being soft. Here is a group that borrowed money to pay for college, no one forced them to borrow, now they want someone else to pay back their loans. That is not accepting the responsibilty they took on when they borrowed the money.
October 9, 201115 yr Author I don't think that 'student loans' is what is excessively driving these protests. I agree with them on the issue of corporate greed and the influence they hold on Government officials. I don't think the right should just throw that issue off to the side just because of who is making the argument. We can still offer lower taxes for the sake of them coming here and hiring Americans, but also engage in an argument to say enough with the corporate greed. I sum up the protests-tea party activists and the wall street protesters- like this. One is tired of the Corporate greed in America and the other is tired of the Government greed in America.

Are you telling me those were all kids with college loans that they don't want to pay back? That's what they're protesting?
October 9, 201115 yr I'm in NYC today and saw the protests. Are you telling me those were all kids with college loans that they don't want to pay back? That's what they're protesting. Many of those shown on TV and on web sites were complaining of the burdens of their college loans and that the banks were bailed out, but not them. I was always of the belief that the banks should have been allowed to fail and now I believe the students should pay back the money they borrowed and spent. Accept the consequences of your actions, whether you are a business or a student.

Not sure why that is, but I think overall, both sides are fed up with the way things are.I agree! They are fed up! The occupy movement has people coming from different angles but in the end it's what you said, they are fed up, but not sure how to go about it. I was around the Square today as this was going on in Cincinnati and it was mostly people in the 30's and up! NOT many were students! Some in the occupy movement want to get arrested to bring more attention to their cause, their permit ends at 1 AM today (Sunday), many said they will not leave the square which may get them arrested. We shall see. Personally if I was the CPD, I would let the stay, just ignore them and the end of the permit deadline.
October 9, 201115 yr Others think it's just college kids or people with college debt who don't want to pay it back, that is not the point, it's asking why did we need to bail out all this other stuff but you don't care about me and my debt? What about me? Just to point out that the government just cares about who lines their pockets and that Wall Street is out of control. I thought the bail outs were needed, BUT the people that were bailed out did not do what they said they would or expected to do. I agreed with both stimulus packages, but they did not work, we don't need another. A big part of the problem is Europe. About 40% of the US GDP goes towards the debt, in European Union one of the most stable nations is Germany, theirs is almost 80% of their GDP, BUT nations such as Greece, Spain and I think Italy as well are ar or above 100% of their GDP. I think we need to get rid of all the people in DC! A statement needs to be made that the people will not put up with this anymore and that whoever is newly elected better change things and get others hands out of their pockets! But, we won't do that, peopl will say they like this congressman or that senator and won't vote to get rid of them. They ALL need to go to be effective!
October 9, 201115 yr Smoke and mirrors from this group. They can't say they oppose Obama because 90% of them voted for him. So his plan didn't work, and now they are mad, but still can't blame him. Must be somebody else.

October 9, 201115 yr This is supposed to be the lefts answer to the Tea Party. Van Jones - the former Marxists and former 'Green Jobs Czar' position makes that case. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2011/09/29/van_jones_were_going_to_build_a_progressive_counterbalance_to_tea_party.html BTW, I know the 'Marxist' label will be considered inflammatory - so who actually has put that label Van Jones? Answer: The LA Times. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2009/09/obama-adviser-van-jones.html "Van Jones, the onetime Marxist...."
October 9, 201115 yr I walked by the NYC protest today. Geraldo was there. Lots of interesting looking cats there. There were some saying that their student loans should be dropped since the banks got breaks. Mixed crowd - hardly the hippie/loser generalization that some are trying to make. IMO it takes extremists to get these things going and to gain attention. Just like the TP is not filled with imbeciles and racists despite the media showing such to be in the TP this group's extreme members are what is getting the issue brought to the attention of the masses. It's what is beautiful about America.

I've spoke with people that have done that and have been told it's fairly easy to do.
