I remember that in CKY there was rarely any games on a Wednesday. (No baseball, basketball, etc)

 

But unfortunately here it's not always the case. My daughter plays High School softball and there were about 3 or 4 games on Wednesdays. I took a vacation day to go to one but missed all but that one on those days. I hated that.

 

I noticed this when I was living in CKy and EKy that about the only time you would see a Wednesday game was during District/Region time. Living in Kentucky's Catholic Corridor now, Wednesday night games are a regularity. In soccer, girls' games seem to have claimed Monday and Wednesday as their night, while the boys' games are typically on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Don't know if this is related or not. When I first moved to Maysville (1979), a BUNCH of the businesses in town closed on Wednesday afternoon. However, I was told that it was so the local gentry could go hang out at the country club.

 

I never got the impression that the practice was to give folks time to get prepared for church.

 

Same was true with Brooksville. Still today, a few businesses are closed on Wednesdays.

Since many (most) of us played high school sports, how would you have felt if a team member missed an important match/game/meet to attend Wednesday night church?

 

I'm fairly certain my team would not have taken kindly to it, at all!

When I was a coach at Madison Central we didn't mind at all if a player missed because of church. We actually encouraged them to go. We would plan our practice around things like this. If they had to miss for a family or church function that was alright with us. The coaching staff I was on told our athletes that God and family comes first. I can't speak for how it is now though.

 

Wednesday night is bible study for our church we. Do some of the same things mentioned here. I enjoy teaching it when it is my turn.

Speaking of which, that recalls a story from when I was a kid. Our priest at my hometown church had anger issues and had somehow got it into his very uptight German head that people were skipping Mass because of football, and he placed a football on the Cross one Sunday morning to illustrate his point. Mass was at 9 a.m. and usually was wrapped up in the wham-bang 45 minutes. I don't think anybody had the heart to tell him that no NFL games were being played at 9 a.m. on Sundays.

My teams, and honestly I woudln't have either and I typically went to church twice a week, with a bible study on a third night. But I wouldn't have missed games for it.

What about practice?

I went to mass once at Mary Queen of Heaven in Erlanger as a kid. Noon mass. Small parish. Fr Siangetti (sp?) had me back for most of the 12:30 pregame. I think mass lasted about 22 minutes.

What about games? For instance, if it was a key district or region game?

Don't notice many games getting scheduled on Wednesdays, not even youth games. Most practices are right after school so they would be over in plenty of time to go to church if they chose too.

Our Wednesday night service is like most, a Bible Study. Our Wednesday attendance is sometimes as much as 50% of our Sunday morning attendance. Sunday night is between 10-20%. Our Wednesday service is very open with a lot of discussion..I actually enjoy it more than Sunday morning most weeks.

Wednesday night is generally not a "worship service" like that which is commanded for us to observe on the first day of the week.

 

I cannot speak for everyone, but in my experience, mid-week assembly is more of a less formal bible study, where the congregation can come together and study and fellowhip with one another. You won't likely see a contribution collected, communion observed or a typical sermon preached. You will generally study a bible lesson, sing, pray, give testimony, support one another, etc.

 

That's about how I'd sum it up as well. When growing up mostly during the summer months there would also often times be a meal before hand(usually lasagna) at least that's how I remember it being. Wednesday night's were far less formal.

Ok, I might have implied those who cannot make it on Wednesday nites are not important, not my word. If work/ball games keeps the away, then thats not my intent. But I have gone on wednesday for over 30 years and I lived it. My sons have played on wednesdays and I worked for many years on wednesdays. I'm just saying what I have seen. And I got most of this from the Core group. Look at any church website and they post their numbers. 300/75 is what I used as a ratio that is very close. Some churches use the fellowship hall on wednesdays. Its a better fit.

 

Most don't want to go on wednesdays, sorry but the numbers don't lie.

 

I agree with you Larry. It isn't to diminish another's involvement, but it is just a fact in many churches. The church I attend probably averages about 50 people on Sundays (it will range from 40-60 typically). On Wednesday night, we usually have about 12 adults. It can vary a few from time-to-time. My brother-in-law and his wife used to come regularly, but they've got three children ranging from 1 1/2 to 4, so they quit coming. I'd never heard of the ratio you mention, but it matches pretty close to my experience. This is also true of other functions like revivals or guest speaker services. You'll generally have that same core group at those events with a few other possible additions. Have you found that to be true as well in your experience?

Special guests such a singings/groups speaking creation (example)/Revivals can bring it a lot more people. My former Church had 268 on Sunday, Sunday nite 110 and 77 on Wednesday nite. You see the same families on Wednesdays/Sunday Nites. Plus of course on Sunday mornings.

 

5Wide the ratio is just what I've seen over my years of seeing the records, and as we search we can see what they post in their bullentins on Sunday morning.

 

From the Bullentin this past Sunday at the forth largest Baptist Church in Jefferson County. Sunday School had 594, in Worship 691, Sunday nite 368..no record was givien for Wedensday nite.

We regularly attend Wednesday services at our church. Our pastor is a wonderful teacher, we are currently studying the miracles of Jesus. My wife and I spend one Wednesday a month torturing the kids in the nursery. Well, I torture them, the wife nurtures them. Our teenagers have their youth service on Wednesdays and are very active. Frankly speaking, I enjoy the Wednesday services as much or more than the Sunday services. I enjoy being a student I suppose.
