Most (not all) youth sports coaches try and schedule practices so that kids can attend Wed services if they want to. There are almost never any games on Wed, but occasionally there will be due to rainouts, etc. I wouldn't make my kids drop a sport because it kept them from Bible study on Wed nights, but I know some would and I understand that.

When I wrestled we had a match almost every Wednesday night and it was a very common practice throughout the state.

I asked this same question last week to a co-worker of mine because it had always puzzled me. She said that it was more informal but to get your mind back on track mid-week (between Sunday services).

 

Pretty much the way I always took it. When I was in High School we'd always have a youth service on Wednesday that I went to just about every week. I enjoyed it more as a teenager than the actual Service on Sunday.

In my opinion I think there should be Church services held seven days a week.

In this day and time there are so many people that have to work on Sunday's,

which makes it almost impossible for people like myself to attend a worship service on a Sunday.

If the christian leaders of today were truly concerned about saving the souls of the lost,they would have Church services seven days a week.

Since many (most) of us played high school sports, how would you have felt if a team member missed an important match/game/meet to attend Wednesday night church?

 

I'm fairly certain my team would not have taken kindly to it, at all!

Not sure how it originated, but I think Wednesday night is viewed as a sort of mid-week refueling for Christians.

Wednesday night is generally not a "worship service" like that which is commanded for us to observe on the first day of the week.

 

I cannot speak for everyone, but in my experience, mid-week assembly is more of a less formal bible study, where the congregation can come together and study and fellowhip with one another. You won't likely see a contribution collected, communion observed or a typical sermon preached. You will generally study a bible lesson, sing, pray, give testimony, support one another, etc.

 

That's pretty much how ours is. It is a Bible Study. I would be curious to know the origin of this practice though. Some churches in my area do Thursday night instead of Wednesday, but Wednesday is definitely the most common.

Correct, we do not celebrate on the day Jesus died. We have a prayer service, but no mass.

Your "Core" group shows up on wednesdays. The true heart of the Church. A Church might have 300 for a Sunday Worship and maybe 75 on a wednesday nite. This is also a time for a Business meetings/discussions, since its hard to do on a Sunday. Some folks will go to Church every Sunday their whole life but never on a Wednesday.

 

I usually wear casual clothes (Bama Polos). The prayer concerns can last up to 20/30 minutes. Bible classes are offered but my kids love the Youth time. They play games, video games, and if there is a gym that can be fun to. Also wednesday nite Pot Lucks can be like a thanksgivingmeal. In the new testament Fellowship time is mentioned several times. Great question.

My teams, and honestly I woudln't have either and I typically went to church twice a week, with a bible study on a third night. But I wouldn't have missed games for it.

I disagree with your first comment about the "true heart of the Church" showing up on Wednesdays. There are quite a few very active members of the Church that can't participate in services/events/etc. during the week due to either work or family commitments. To say they aren't as important as those that can show up during the weeks is a disservice to many very good, passionate members of the church IMO.

Ok, I might have implied those who cannot make it on Wednesday nites are not important, not my word. If work/ball games keeps the away, then thats not my intent. But I have gone on wednesday for over 30 years and I lived it. My sons have played on wednesdays and I worked for many years on wednesdays. I'm just saying what I have seen. And I got most of this from the Core group. Look at any church website and they post their numbers. 300/75 is what I used as a ratio that is very close. Some churches use the fellowship hall on wednesdays. Its a better fit.

 

Most don't want to go on wednesdays, sorry but the numbers don't lie.

Don't know if this is related or not. When I first moved to Maysville (1979), a BUNCH of the businesses in town closed on Wednesday afternoon. However, I was told that it was so the local gentry could go hang out at the country club.

 

I never got the impression that the practice was to give folks time to get prepared for church.

We are searching for a new church, be two years in February, so I see a lot of programs in our search. Websites is something we go on to before a visit. Sunday nites are being done away with a lot of places. And those crowds are smaller than Wednesdays.
