A HS Football forum would seem an odd place to vent old girl's sports' vendettas, but then I'm seldom surprised anymore?? Maybe the BB Girl's freshman track team ran up the score??

Football at Brossart was actually started for 1 player. There was no demand for it, and the timing was bad due to our overall athlete pool at the time, and it has been an uphill battle since then. My caveat to our administration had always been that if we were going to do football it needed to be an asset to us, and not something that could be used against us. The football folks at Brossart are really trying hard to make a go of it, but if we were going to have started football it should have been in 2002 when Anderson, McCarthy, McDole, Schenk, Smith, Reilly, and Cooper were freshmen and would have given us a great nucleus to build on, and then right back with Troy Cooper, Nate Mutsch, Kyle Kramer, Josh Kidney, Matt Lloyd, Bryan Niemeyer, Luke Rebholz, Kyle Lubbers, and maybe Jimmy Uebel would have sustained it. Had we started football then instead of when we did, the poll at the top of this page would be much more balanced and there would be a real discussion about who the winner of this game might be.

All of the guys mentioned here were great athletes and some certainly had very good size, strength and agility, however, none of them were football players. Good athletes are great to "round out" a football roster and you may find a star receiver or tight end in this group but you need football players to be successfull. You need guys that have played the game for 6 years and already know the basics and have developed an instinct for the game. Weren't Cooper, Kidney, Uebel and others in this group very good soccer players? Why would they have put aside years of soccer development to jump to a fledgling football program?

 

This is what still gives the small NKY schools the edge over a program like Brossart. It will take years and years to develop a football program.

Good points regarding "football players" EG, although the situation isn't quite as hopeless as it may seem IMO. Those several classes of outstanding athletes mentioned, that was so successful in many sports, had few with any football experience; although had they grown up as football players, I'm certain they would have had some success. The program has had several setbacks since it's beginning, as many on here have mentioned, and now getting moved into 2-A as about the 26-27th smallest school in the state (current enrollment) will probably be another. In some ways, its like football has "started over" a couple of times in the only 4-5 years of the BB's programs existence??

 

That said, they have had some stability in the coaching ranks, numbers are up, and they are beginning to get some players with actual football experience; with an active middle school program that is getting better. They will undoubtably continue to lose very good football players to NCC or Highlands, but can be an option for that next tier of Campbell County kids, some who may turn into very nice varsity players as they mature.

 

I still think the model used at Walton Verona (get a group of interested kids at the middle school age, play a freshman schedule when they get to 9th, JV schedule as they age and then go Varsity when they're seniors) is the preferred way to build a program. That way as the program matures, there is a system in place at the younger ages to develop replacements for the graduating seniors each year. Small schools will still go up & down with given strong & weaker classes; but not the huge swings in talent level.

 

I'd anticipate a move back to 1-A in the next realignment, where they may be more competitive with the other (non-Beechwood) area small schools. The fact that they have overachieved in most of their others sports, where they're consistently more than competitive with much larger schools, probably hasn't helped football, as all kids want to be part of a winner. Agree, it may be years before the program gets to a true competitive level, and sports like soccer may suffer if it does??

I will take NCC ACT scores, A lot of the kids that go there are from the inter city, It will not be long and St Joe's will be a feeder School for NCC look at the numbers.

Anytime it deals with Brossart and NewCath it's going to be interesting.

Obviously, Brossart is way more concerned with NewCath than vice versa. Newcath isnt concerned with their overall record against one particular school. They are more concerned with winning regional & state titles. Maybe Brossart should concern themselves more with finding a way to beat the likes of Scott in basketball, Harrison Co in baseball and everyone else in their path to get to a regional title. They claim they tell kids "Come here to play for Championships", well that should obviously be the motto for NewCath because that is all they do. Regional titles should come much easier in the 10th region than they do the 9th. Normally the 10th region will have 1-2 teams that have a legitimate shot to win a regional title in baseball and basketball where as the 9th region has 6 of the 8 with legit shots. Getting back to the topic at hand, NCC wins this game very easily, the starters play the first half at the most and the underclassmen finish it up. Knowing Coach Eviston and his staff they will never humiliate Brossart or anyone else, they respect their opponents and the game of football too much. Let's hope we hear a huge "USA" chant from both sides as we honor the men and women of our armed forces.

Ok Sticker Mann I am going to agree that yes they now have some stability in the coaching ranks and your point about the next level kid and coaching them up is what is needed. The 2A situation is a disaster for this program for two reasons:

 

1. Having to compete at a larger school level with athletes that are not quite at that level as a group (several individual kids would be)

2. Being put in with NCC. If they were moved to 2A and NCC was not in 2A I do not think this would be as disasterous a sitation as I perceive it. Now think about it even if they were to make the playoffs they would be looking at a rematch with NCC early on in the playoffs. My thoughts are that Brossart does not need any sport to be so far behind NCC that it can be used against them. All other sports are on equal or better footing with NCC (and please NCC people do not bring up baseball because obviously the usage of one of your studs from last years team could really come back to haunt you). As long as they were not playing you could always play the "what if" game but you did not have to worry about the cold hard facts slapping Brossart in the face. Once the disparity becomes factual "so to speak" and kids see it year in and year out it can have an effect on where kids want to go which also in turn has an effect on Brossart's other sports if they are 2 or 3 sport players.

 

Bottom line is Brossart I think was fine as long as they did not have to play NCC. Carve out a niche in there class and develop a program, which I think with all the mistakes along the way has been set back. However, from what I am at least reading the coaching staff seems to be quality and committed.
