The fact that next year's schedule is already set is very telling. Programs don't just draw these schedules up in the dirt a couple of months before the season starts.

 

Personally, I like having Rowan, Harrison and Montgomery on the schedule. Larger schools, not too far to drive; could develop into nice long-standing rivalries.

Maybe everyone has forgotten but Mason County had Highlands on the ropes at Highlands in 2003 in the playoffs, and Montgomery, and Rowan County use to be a joke and Mason County would be in street clothes at half time. There is only one way to be the best and that is to play the best and to beat the best! If you win 9 and 10 games a year and lose in the opening round of the playoffs you have solved nothing.

I'm no coach or AD (heck, I never was THAT much of an athlete). But I agree 100% with this post. No law says each and every game has to be against a world-beater, but the emphasis should be on preparing for district and post-season play. You don't do that by scheduling an entire slate of creampuffs. Schedule a game against a high-powered passing team, a game against a smash-mouth running team, develop some nice rivalries against quality competition.

Thank you and you are correct in why we scheduled Highlands- not just for the playoffs but to make us better as a team and program for the long haul. We did not play well and that starts with me, the head coach. When I say that, I am not taking anything away from the Blue Birds. They are a GREAT team and one of the best I have seen- ever.

 

Even after the game, our staff was glad we had taken on the challenge and thought we could use alot from that game to improve. I still believe we have great kids and coaches and that we will fight through this and be better.

UH......2003? By my count that is a long time ago and has no bearing on anything this season. Nobody said anything about cream puffs but I guarantee you there a plenty of teams that can prepare you for the playoffs without scheduling arguably the second best team in the entire state when you strip away the classes. Kudos to Mason County for playing hard the whole game!

That was quite a game. You guys had one heck of a team......But to discuss Highlands football program in 2003 and then compare them to where Dale has his program in 2011 are entirely 2 different animals. They are better coached across the board and they better prepare themselves. Quite honestly on a different level from where they were 10 years ago. IMO!

I said after covering the Highlands-Boyle Co game that NOBODY else on their schedule would come within 3 td's of them. Their offense is something else. PT is one heck of a QB, and IMO, best in the state. (No disrespect to Trinity's Wright)Highlands will cruise to #21 this year as long as they stay healthy...they are in the middle of one heck of a run.

 

I doubt that many if any find this comment disrepectful.

And if I read the second comment right, are you saying that the Birds are on a 8 to 10 yr Straight Title run? With the FTJFL feeder program and the community support you may just be spot on Walter. YIKES!!!!!!!
