beechwood is very fast off the ball, and played very physical.

I can't wait until coach Brilz gets a hold of this group.

Glad I went to the game tonight. Based on the postings I thought Boone would be too much for Beechwood. Compared to last year think Boone looked more athletic this year. This Beechwood team surprised me. Might have to go to all the games this year. They are fun to watch!

 

 

Boone won the coin toss and deferred to 2nd half. Seemed critical when you consider what happened at end of first half and beginning of 2nd.

Of note was this was set up on a 25 yd play action pass from Fieger (11) to Combs (82) down to the 1 yd line. Boone was totally fooled on the play.

 

Beechwood stopped boone on 1st and goal from 3. Fourth down ended with 1:40 left in the second.

Boone then had Drive stopped inside the 20 by interception by Burns (87) on the first play of the 4th quarter.

 

Beechwood went 3 and out that ended with a smart intentional offensive pass interference by Slusher (14). Boone was clearly going to intercept and possibly return for TD. Interference cost Beechwood yardage but prevented score. Boone got the ball after punt around the Beechwood 30 yd line. Long slow drive to the goal line ended in another Beechwood goal line stand which ended with 6:07 left in the game. Beechwood eeked out more 2 first downs and finally got stopped on 3rd down at the Beechwood 35 yd line with 1:40 left. Coach Chevalier called a fake punt which went Talley (34) to Slusher (14) for a first down. Beechwood killed the clock with a final score of 20-6.

 

What I heard about this team is true. I wouldn't call any of them "studs" but a bunch of kids who work hard and play hard.

 

In the first half Slusher (14) and Etler (75) played very well defensively. The defensive line play was phenomenal considering the size of Boone county. I think Mahorney (79), Arlinghaus (62), Stokes (85), Combs (82) would also be thrown in there.

 

Beechwood kickers (Talley (34) punting, Burns (87) Kickoffs) did a great job keeping the ball away from the dangerous Boone players. Only one punt return was substantial and that was aided by facemask penalty.

 

Fieger (11) played very well at quarterback, especially considering he is an 8th grader. Fieger (11) muffed the kickoff after the Boone TD and it almost looked like Boone could recover but he scooped it up and ran around the outside for the TD. Schmidt (31) didn't have any break away runs but did a good job holding onto the ball and getting a few yards at a time. Bankemper (30) got a few carries and also did a good job on defense.

 

Beechwood freshman coaches did an excellent job. (Chevalier, Rhino, Riely, Whilhoff)

So I think we know it's clear that the best frosh team in NKY is Beechwood.

They don't play. Beechwood plays in the smaller schools freshman league. Boone County was able to step up and fill in an opening in Beechwood's schedule since some of the small schools are not fielding freshman teams. I think Newport and Lloyd are the two that weren't able to field freshman teams this year. Conner also stepped in to an opening earlier in the year. Beechwood had CCH tentatively scheduled but something caused that to fall through. From here on out, Beechwood plays smaller school teams Scott, Holmes and Holy Cross plus another "fill in" game against Purcell Marian. Then the playoffs which will almost surely end up with Beechwood facing New Cath again in the championship. Beechwood beat New Cath earlier in the year, which is New Cath's only loss.

This is very impressive for the Beechies. From what I heard the Boone Co team is legit and if they handled them this way and Ru gave his blessing (although he is a former Beechie) then they must be very good.
