Why didn't Henry Clay do better???

Featured Replies

Again, I'm going by what some BGP'ers had written about them. I kept hearing about the high level of talent on the team. Did Saint X and Trinity still have more talent than they did???

Trinity did not have more individual talent. Trinity played better as a team. Same goes for St. X. Their QB has no D-1 offers. One lineman does. None of their receivers or DBs will play D-1. Anderson may develop into a Div 1 RB or wideout or DB. None of Trinity's Seniors will get offers from Div-1 NCAA schools. Junior class may get one. One soph probably will if he continues to develop.

So you are saying they played up to the talent potential? And that Trinity was just more talented, with better athletes than HC?

I'm saying that they were a pretty good team that had a pretty good season. On the night they played the Rocks, the Rocks played better. It happens. Could it have turned out differently on some other night? Sure.

Great individual talent no doubt. But seemed to lack discipline and team chemistry.

I have 2 HC questions.... who do they have coming back?... and do they ever scrimmage Lex Cath in football or play jv - frosh games? Thanks.

Henry Clay has some excellent playmakers coming back. Their outstanding 2005 team's run deep into the playoffs provided great experience for the 2006 team........but, they must replace a three year starter at quarterback and the entire offensive line. They have some promising players in these positions who must grow up quickly to enable the team to build on the successes of the 2005 club.

They have not scrimmaged Lexington Catholic of late nor played them in JV or freshman and I understand are unable to due to Fayette County's ridiculous boycott of Lexington Catholic. I think Coach Simpson would and maybe someone in our reading audience has the political clout to get this accomplished.

^ Thanks for the info. I think had HC scrimmaged or played Lex Cath it would have given them a glimpse at what a passing team can do to you. May have made a difference in the outcome. Still it's hard to travel to the Rock and come away with a W.

To my mind, it is not so much just seeing the different styles of play, but it is recognizing you can compete with the best. It is a mental adjustment that teaches you that this is high school football, and that, if you want it, you can achieve it.

Highlands and CovCath schedule Ohio teams. They may not have great records against those teams, but I guarantee every player believes they can win...and it pays off later in the season.

For Lexington Catholic, it is scheduling the St. X's and Male's in the early season (and Trinity in pre-season) that has finally paid off.

For all the talk from St. X and Trinity on BGP, they know LC walks on the field to win.

Someone asked on another thread if LexCath will now surpass Highlands and CovCath....which, for a lack of a better word, is silly. Those two programs are not going to back down from one LC title. At the same time, they have met LC on the field enough times to know it is a program to be reckoned with.

Henry Clay needs to do the same. Certainly, Belfry, Bell, and Boyle are fine programs, (and I am not looking to pick a fight with them) but HC needs to look to better competition for their non-district games to prepare their players for later on.

This is a major point that a lot of people miss. LexCath will now push Highlands and CovCath to become even better. The same way T and X push each other. With out competition, there is no reason to work harder.

The Fayette county boycott of LexCath has been in place offically since 2001. We haven't played any of the Lexington schools in football (at any level) in at least the last 5 years...maybe longer.

What I find odd is that Henry Clay did travel to St. Matthews two seasons ago for a freshmen game with the Rocks.

I may be wrong but I don't see why LexCath would ever want to play any of the Lexington Public schools. They manage to do quite well with their annual 4A opponent (Male, Trinity, X). What would they gain by replacing one of the perineal powerhouses with a Lexington Public school that might have a champioship calliber team every decade or so. This match-up might be good for the publics but I see nothing that it would offer the Knights.

For me...take your pick.

It's a community thing.

I like high school football, and I would like to see all the schools do better.

I'm a firm believer that having a strong sports program makes the entire school rise ...kids throughout the school take more pride and try harder at everything, particularly academics..and again it makes the community stronger.

Both the private and public kids grow up and play together, and I think it means something to them.

I'd like to see the public schools end their 24 year championship drought. It would make the whole city feel good if they did.....If playing Catholic helps, great....I know they've got the talent. Playing them would only make Catholic even better.

Finally, I'd like to see Lexington Catholic kick their butts, and I bet the publics would like to kick Catholics butts. (am I allowed to say butts?)

I beleive we scrimmaged LexCath 5 or 6 years ago.

Coming back:

RB/CB Minnifield: "playmaker" sr to be

WR Jeter: 1000 yrd rec sr to be

WR Boyd: 6'4'' jr to be. 500+ yrds rec

LB Burton: 70+ tacks

DB Bentley: 70+ tacks

A very good nucleus. Holes to fill are QB, OL, LB, and DL(players w/ experience returning but will need to step up).

OL will have five new starters, but exceptional size:

6'5'' 330 JR

6'3'' 250 JR

6'4'' 250 SO

6'2'' 240 JR

6' 230 SR

6' 190 SR

This group may take a little time to develope, but have in my opinion the best offensive line coach in the state if not the best coach to mold them into a good unit...Marty Joyce(Clark Co head coach in 1991 who won state title and beat Trinity and St. X in consecutive games to do it).

Trinity's frosh played at HC in 2003. It was a great game decided at the end on a failed conversion attempt T-7 HC-6. By far the best game (competition) of that frosh season

Where did Minnifield go to Middle School? Does he have any colleges looking at him yet?

^Minnifield went to The Lexington School, but played his only year of middle school football in the Lexington Catholic Youth Football Program. He is receiving interest from KY, L'ville, Michigan, Michigan St, Northwestern and Memphis.

With all due respect to everyone...I didn't see any of these teams play, but I feel safe in saying that when Trinity and X step on the football field to play high school teams in KY, they are rarely....very rarely, the lesser talented of the two.

When considering the top of 4A, X and T are ALWAYS deeper but rarely more talented.
