Why didn't Henry Clay do better???

Featured Replies

Throughout the year, and even very lately, I have read from BGP'ers that Henry Clay was certainly one of the most talented teams in the state this year, but that they were not one of the 4A elite. Why was there a disconnect between talent level and how good the team actually was in 2005? How did their talent level compare to Saint X's and Trinity's this past year?

?

I thought they had a very good year. Loosing in the semi's to the eventual state champ ain't bad in most people's books.

Not bad at all. :thumb:

They just ran into a Trinity team that was on fire. I think they were probably the 4th best team in the state (Trinity, X, LexCath, HC).

Again, I'm going by what some BGP'ers had written about them. I kept hearing about the high level of talent on the team. Did Saint X and Trinity still have more talent than they did???

I would like to know how many paid coaches HC has in their program and how many T and X have?

Also, when you go for it on 4th and short on the 34 (if it wasn't the 34 it was very close) in the 1st quarter and don't get it, it turns into a touchdown, and you lose you may get fired at X and T.

That might have something to do with it.

They simply didn't look very disciplined - they taunted/danced/celebrated more than is common for high school athletes. They had LOTS of individual talent, but nowhere near enough TEAM focus. (I did only see tham play against Trinity.)

Not sure paid coaches has anything to do about talent levels. It's the intangibles T and X has that brings out the talent. HC had some very talented players, and I fell in love with one of their lineman, I think #55, he couldn't of been 5' 10", 250 lbs, but he left his heart on the field.

Here's a thought...and I KNOW I'd better duck.....

Here in Lexington the public school adults have chosen to boycott Lexington Catholic.

At no point are their kids being taught that they can beat Lexington Catholic... except by talking.

Fortunately, in basketball, we at least play in the district and/or regionals. The public basketball players have found out that they can play even with LexCath...why, they even win on occasion!!! How amazing to find out the game is decided on the court!!

Are the football players in Lexington, be it sublimally, being taught that all private schools have an advantage they can't overcome? Are they going into the semi-finals already beaten?

As an aside, Lexington Catholic has lost to Male, has beaten Male...has lost to St. X, has beaten St. X.

LexCath players at least feel the ability to compete....because the adults schedule such games.

I think your missing the point by guru. It's a legitimate question.

Talent can't be invented. But it can be nurtured and developed to its fullest potential. The more Individual attention that someone can be given in any endeavor, the better the chances are of success.

Students in a smaller Teacher-student ratio tend to perform better on tests, scores and grades.

Players that have more specialized attention because there are more coaches to help them develop their skills, the better performance on the field and in the future.

Fairly accurate analysis. Loads of talent, that's for sure. I had the good fortune to see them play a couple of times. But they didn't seem to have the same focus that Trinity had in the playoffs. Still, state semifinals and lost to the eventual state champ is a pretty darned good year in my book.

I hate to say it but HC had a great chance to make the T game much closer, they made some crucial mistakes but were very good IMO

The Lexington Catholic boycott is one that is not embraced by at least one Lexington football coach. Not to speak for him, but I feel certain Sam Simpson would love to play Lexington Catholic. I think 90%+ of the students, fans, coaches, players, etc. in Lexington would like to see the publics play Lexington Catholic and Lexington Christian in football. Only a select few are fueling this ridiculous boycott.

As far as Henry Clay's lack of parlaying their outstanding talent into a state championship, I am going to blame it on experience. Henry Clay had not been in that position of the state semi-finals in over ten years. Trinity and St. X are there every year and I truly believe their players and coaches have developed a comfort level with the competition at championship time. It looked to me the Trinity players and coaches knew they were going to win that ballgame. Just like what Coach K has instilled in the Duke basketball players. That is the result of Pride, Loyalty, Discipline, and Achievement over many years. It doesn't happen overnight.

Henry Clay's football program needs to continue to strive to achieve this level of excellence. This year's talented team making it to the semi-finals versus Trinity was a long stride in the right direction towards establishing itself as a "year-in, year-out" contender in 4A football.
