August 30, 201115 yr I'd just like to see him in the lineup somewhere as apparently Jocketty would based on the article that was noted above and submitted below. I honestly don't care where he plays on defense. At this point in the season it makes no difference to the standings. The whole point was don't put him into a situation to fail. He had 2 games over the weekend that were meaningless that he could have started Alonso in against right handers where he wouldn't have felt near the pressure to perform. After last night I'll be surprised if we see him again for another week. They'll be pulling them alright but probably way over Cairo's head into the outfield seats. I hear what you are saying and I know Dusty studies the numbers to an extreme but they are still 13.5 games back in the standings. Time to find out if he has a place on this team or needs to be traded. I guess we can start the talk about another first baseman, (22 yr old Neftali Soto), in the Red's organization that will probably be at AAA next year based on his 2011 numbers @ Carolina. He had some pretty nice stats and definitely has some pop in his bat. August 30, 201115 yr It's not hard to be flawless when you don't have a ball hit to you. You're missing the whole point with this discussion on Alonso at third. I agree he deserves another game there maybe even an extended period there but why did Dusty wait until the Phillies came to town to start the experiment? Wouldn't it have made sense to throw him out there over the last weekend against Washington instead? He had 2 chances to put him there against right handers Wang on Friday and Zimmerman on Sunday. Why throw him into the pressure cooker of playing the Phillies and facing a tough lefty in Hamels. I guess he'll sit him tonight against Halladay and put him back out there tomorrow against the lefty Lee. Makes sense. I mean unless it really matters whether they finish 2nd, 3rd or 4th the Phillies games are no more important than the games last weekend. As for the lefty/righty thing maybe they want to see what he can do against some tough lefties, who knows? If he is the offensive force many on here are touting him to be and a middle of the order hitter on a contending team he should be able to hit both.

If Votto wasn't thrown into that kind of situation why Alonso? Because the Reds expect to contend next season and they need to know if Alonso is an everyday player.

None of those have anything to do with him playing 3B versus 1B or LF. That is my point. The fact that he is facing Hamels has nothing to do with his defense.

As much anti-Dusty sentiment as there is on this board (and yes, I told you so), you take it to the extreme. If Alonso is as good as you and some Reds think he is, it really shouldn't matter who he faces and the timing of it.

All 18 players on the field are playing for something, whether it's a new contract or their job for next season or a myriad of other things.
