There was a big discussion in one of the weekly threads earlier in the year about when a starting pitcher should be pulled from a game. I made the statement that the rule of thumb is don't let your starting pitcher take a loss late in the game. There was much scoffing at my comment. Tonight, Cliff Lee is pitching a shutout in the ninth, two outs, leading 3-0. He hits Cairo to load the bases. Shutout or not, Manuel pulls Lee. Why? Because you don't let your starting pitcher take a loss after pitching a game like Lee did tonight. That means the starting pitcher does not pitch to the go ahead run in the game.

This is exactly right. Most people don't realize this, but this was 100% the correct move.
September 1, 201115 yr You are talking about the way you want things to be. I am telling you how they are. You don't want the Reds to care about putting their best team out there versus the Phillies. I am telling you that the Reds do care about it. They want to know that if they are ever the team trying to stay in a race that they can count on all teams doing their best to beat the team they are chasing. It is another part of the code in baseball. That is just the way it is, like it or not. Please explain why Alonso only started one game of the series then. September 1, 201115 yr Gotcha. I misunderstood your point. I'm with you on getting EV in there. Alonso needs to play everyday in LF if JV is not going to move. Alonso has to be in the lineup. We'll just have to live with his glove. He can't be in the lineup if they are playing teams in any kind of race. The Reds have to try to beat them with Fred Lewis and Miguel Cairo because the Braves would be mad if they played young guys or Tony Larussa would whine about it. It's all on page two of this topic.

Either way it's a direct contradiction to your theory. I don't think him at 3B or in LF is the best team right now. He gives up more on defense than he can make up on offense. He just can't play LF based on what we have seen. At 3B he is an experiment. I don't know how he has looked in workouts but I am sure if they were confident enough in his defense there he would be playing more. They are picking his spots and trying to find games where there won't be much action at 3B to break him in slowly. The thing so many people overlook is that defense is just as important as offense in baseball. One error on defense against a team like the Phillies and you lose. It is hard to say with the call ups and Rolen coming back, but I would guess Alonso's best chance at starting at 3B is when Bailey and Cueto pitch.

Make sure you include this guy or people might think you are serious. But to help you on this, I will keep my eye out and cite examples that prove my point as the season continues. I am not making this stuff up. I see it almost every year in MLB. It is going to be harder this year with there being so few close races but I will try to find examples for you and help you out. Hang in there my friend, if you have an open mind, the truth will get in there.
