I just don't get the way the Reds are handling Alonso. Dusty seems to be going out of his way to mess with this guy. Stick him out in LF and leave him there. Lord knows we have endured some pretty horrible LF play just to get a stick in the lineup. Why is it different now?

Congrats to Bronson on breaking the Reds season record for home runs allowed by a right hander! Look out Uncle Milty he is coming for your record.

Bruce is pitiful. Missed a fly ball in the first but helped his team out by swinging at ball four with two on and one out. Alonso can't play because of his defense yet Bruce plays when he can't anything with a wrinkle in it. The Reds won't score three runs in any of these games against the Phillies.

:ohbrother:

If I am one of the other Reds players and I walk in to the clubhouse and see Alonso playing LF, I just shake my head. I want to win tonight. I want the best team on the field.

So you would rather walk into the clubhouse and see Fred Lewis in the lineup? That would make you feel like you had a better chance to win? Because he might catch an extra fly ball or not misplay a grounder?

That's a toss up. Considering Alonso committed an error in every game he played in LF and cost the team runs, it becomes a wash. Start out at 0-0 with Lewis and hope the team can score in spite of him or start out down 2-0 with Alonso and hope he can knock in 3 to make up for his defense. Personally, I would rather see Alonso playing 3B and see if he can catch a ball there.

I agree that we need to get Alonso out there at 3B. Even better, he needs to go to the instructional league or winter ball and get experience at 3B. But the fact is you can't quit on this season now for a lot of reasons. It is important to finish the season strong and that has an impact on next year. It is important to all the players that big league quality line ups are on the field. Every pitcher on the staff wants a winning lineup behind him because that W or L is a permanent mark on your record. Players want to put up good numbers and who is hitting around them impacts that. There are other teams in baseball that want the reds to win and you can not disrespect the game at this level by putting a AAA team on the field. Wouldn't the Braves love it if the Reds could have taken 2 or 3 games from the Phillies? How would you feel in the Braves clubhouse if it was clear the Reds didn't care about winning and just wanted to experiment every night? There are a lot of reason why you don't bag the season and just goof around trying this and that. Finally, it is to Alonso's benefit that they handle this right. If they just throw him out there at 3B and he makes 3 errors in one night, what good does that do? That does more harm than good. Yes, we are all disappointed in the Reds this year. We all want Alonso hitting the ball every night at this point in time. But there is a whole lot more to it than just putting him out there and seeing what happens.

Quite frankly that is absurd. If they are trying to win games for the sake of the Braves I will never watch baseball again.

They aren't giving up by playing the young guys. They're seeing if they are the answer at some positions that need answered in the offseason. If the answer to can Alonso play anywhere other than 1B is no shouldn't they find that out now rather than next April and May. If Alonso goes out and handles third relatively well and Rolen retires like some are speculating that means they can focus their attention elsewhere during the winter. Frazier and Alonso should start almost every game no questions asked and they need to bring up Mesoraco becuase Hernandez is gone. Why play for 2011 when you can see what you have for 2012?

Fred Lewis is no better than a 5th outfielder and there's about a 90% chance he doesn't come back this year. Every game he starts is a head scratcher.

I'm not putting all this on Dusty either. If Jocketty wants to see guys he needs to demand it. If he doesn't want to see guys then he better have a really good plan for the winter.

Hermida was claimed by the Padres today dropping the Reds 40 man roster to 39. Paving the way for Mesoraco's addition to the roster tomorrow?

Probably but I don't really see the point in having 3 catchers. He isn't going to play much.

He should play a minimum of 4 games a week.

Yeah, that's not happening. Still can't believe they didn't trade Ramon.

Turn off the TV. You may not see it as much this year because there aren't many tight races, but there are games virtually every season in baseball where a team that is out of the race in September will purposely not play young players because they want to put their best team on the field against teams still in a pennant race.

Phillips 4, Sappelt 7,Votto 3, Bruce 9, Cairo 5, Stubbs 8, Hernandez 2, Janish 6. Willis 1. Vs. LH Lee

Before the Alonso harping begins, I heard the guy from MLB network (Mark Sheldon?) talking to Marty last night and he said Alonso will not play 3B with Arroyo or Willis on the mound.

Any team that doesn't try to develop guys that are needed for the following year because they are playing a team better than them deserves to never get better. I think you are grossly overstating this practice.
