August 29, 201115 yr Did WV not expel him because the court's sentence already forbade him to participate in WV school activities (which one has to assume includes actual school classes)? I cannot imagine a school not officially expelling a student under these conditions. An with all the claims, an investigation will look into this too I guess.
August 29, 201115 yr Is it factual that the Sullivan father had the younger Sullivan purposely fail 8th grade as a vehicle to hold him back? If this is true, I think it speaks volumes about the dysfunction in this family. That is disturbing to hear. What kind of message is that sending to your children? Does anyone else find this disturbing, if true? I find it hard to believe that a fine academic institution like WV would allow this to happen and to top it off the father is in a high level administration position at this school. Is the father still in this position at WV?

August 29, 201115 yr I am fairly certain he left WV as a result of this situation. I believe Dan Sullivan now has a job in Newport Schools. Just looked at the WV High School website. He is listed as Assistant Principal.
August 29, 201115 yr Author I am fairly certain he left WV as a result of this situation. I believe Dan Sullivan now has a job in Newport Schools. Dan's dad is the superintendent at Newport. I believe the Dan in question is still the asst principal at WV.
August 29, 201115 yr Dan's dad is the superintendent at Newport. I believe the Dan in question is still the asst principal at WV. Yep, I checked WV HS website and Dan Sullivan is still listed as assistant principal. Thanks for the info.
August 29, 201115 yr Dan's dad is the superintendent at Newport. I believe the Dan in question is still the asst principal at WV. That's amazing to me if the story about his younger son is true. Who tells their kid to fail a grade to get held back? You certainly would not expect that to come from an Asst. Principal, would you?

August 29, 201115 yr But, that does happen with many other people too, And as far as sports are concerned you cannot be promoted to the 9th grade to be eligible for your 4 years of hs. So, are you saying that you condone pulling your 8th grader from school when he is an above average performer just so he will fail and not get promoted to the 9th grade? That is a ridiculous decision imo.
August 29, 201115 yr So, are you saying that you condone pulling your 8th grader from school when he is an above average performer just so he will fail and not get promoted to the 9th grade? That is a ridiculous decision imo.I am not saying anything on if I agree or not on this issue. Many people hold back their kids for many reasons. I do not know the 8th grader or how he performs, or if he needs another year to mature, so I can't say. But it is legal to do this, that is all I am getting at.

August 29, 201115 yr Author If pulling your kid from school is legal, it should not be. Blatant case of truancy imo. I think it's not truancy if you are said to be "home schooling" the child. Set that aside for a second. What was the reason given? Not mature enough? The youngster is smart so it's not academic. Why not have him repeat at a strong school like WV? Instead, you send him to a school system that unfortunately has been taken over by the state? It's not about academics.
August 29, 201115 yr WOW, why doesn't somebody bring up some dirt on the "grandparents" or "great grandparents"? Seems like people think they know an awful lot about things they know nothing about.

August 29, 201115 yr I am not taking a position one way or the other but if I was the plaintiffs I would work the entire school (WV) hard to look for possible additional victims. I think the article referenced two additional "incidents" and if there were three total my gut says there are probably a lot more.
