Mayfield is the defending state champs. They should be pre-season #1.

After the last 2 years and knowing what Mayfield has returning, it's hard for me to believe Beechwood would take over the #1 spot, especially knowing if they meet it'll be at Mayfield. I'm sure the Beechies are expected to be improved this year, but, no way they've made up the ground they were behind to surpass the Cardinals. No way, none. I'm actually glad, though. The targets on someone elses back and this may be the motivation or lack of respect the Cardinals need to keep them fired up and motivated all year. Hard to stay that way sometimes when you're blowing your opponents out week in, week out...

I am with you. I think Mayfield should be #1. Defending champs, in the title game the last two years and Beechwood hasn't beaten them. Regardless of how many key players Mayfield lost, who Beechwood has coming back and how anyone thinks it looks on paper, I think Mayfield has earned that #1 slot till someone takes it away.

My take is that based on what we lost and Bw returns that Bw should be at #1. I have been pleasantly suprised at what I think I am seeing at practice and with a couple of transfers that may help but I think Bw at #1 is correct for now. I thought Louisville Holy Cross might grab the #3 spot. I had wondered if Russellville would be in the top ten given their heavy graduation from last year.

This sort of logic does not add up to me. Last year we were champs and it has exactly zero to do with this year. The only advantage Mayfield may or may not have is Bw having to come to Mayfield which is like being ask to travel cross country. Bw has not beat Mayfield ever and that might work for Bw or against them depending on how the players view it. I've seen instances of both

I agree and it is not meant to be a slap in the face if a team is not preseason #1. If a championship team loses all 22 starters and the runner-up team returns all 22 starters, why would you rank the previous year champ #1?

I think Mayfield should be number one too but a very strong case can be made either way.

In that extreme I agree, but I don't think we are near that type of extreme in this situation. Mayfield returns their best starter in RB/LB Jackson and a number of others with varsity experience, plus most in the Mayfield thread think their defense will be even better this year. Beechwood returns a lot of starters so no doubt they are going to be good. But with it being that even in who returns, you have to factor in recent history giving Mayfield the nod in preseason.

We are not, but you know what I mean. The idea that "you are still #1 until you lose a game" does not make sense to me because it is not the same team you are fielding.

Beechwood does return quite a few, but, they also lost several guys who were key pieces to last years team. Mayfield loses several linemen, but, has the Nix kid transfering in, who may be as good or better as any they had last year and although unproven, have some very talented underclassmen. D.Jackson will step right into Jones role as WR and they still have Ross & Higginson that are capable to break one at any time. The D will be stout and there running game should be better, especially if Hughes gets the nod at QB. Guhy will be missed because of his accuracy, but, from all indications, this kid is more than capable and alot better athlete.

That only works if you're a NKy team, right?

Thomas Mix is the kid from Ballard. Little brother Mikey plays WR and DB.
