2011 Class 1A Preseason Rankings

Featured Replies

Beechwood does return quite a few, but, they also lost several guys who were key pieces to last years team. Mayfield loses several linemen, but, has the Nix kid transfering in, who may be as good or better as any they had last year and although unproven, have some very talented underclassmen. D.Jackson will step right into Jones role as WR and they still have Ross & Higginson that are capable to break one at any time. The D will be stout and there running game should be better, especially if Hughes gets the nod at QB. Guhy will be missed because of his accuracy, but, from all indications, this kid is more than capable and alot better athlete.

I think Guhy will be the qb from what I have saw. Hughes is a good athlete and will be used somewhere but I think Guhy will get the nod at qb. But I have been wrong before.

The rankings at #1 and #2 are pretty agreeable but what to me is less clear are the others.

That only works if you're a NKy team, right?

Only when they have a history of dominating year after year. Mayfield's only a couple years out of a blowout loss in the finals, isn't it? Being a small school also makes people wonder if they can re-load year after year.

Funny, I had a message from someone today that was surprised that Mayfield was ranked second even after losing Luke Guhy.

Going by the depth chart from last year's state championship game, Mayfield returns four starters on offense and lost the quarterback and 80 percent of the offensive line. Five starters are back on defense, only one on the front four.

What are Beechwood's numbers on returning starters?

The same team that blew Beechwood out the week before. Like I said, it only works for NKy. Beechwoods dominance was before the realignment. Since then, NCC, Danville, LCA and Mayfield have all won one or 2 1a championships. Yes, Beechwood has won a couple themselves, but, is that really anymore dominating than anyone elses? I really don't think so. I guess Beechwood isn't a small school anymore because there's this false premise that they have no problem doing it, when, in fact, Mayfield has reloaded for a hell of alot more years than Beechwood has, going all the way back to the 70's. Sure, they've had a few down years, but, so has Beechwood and even in the down years, both win there fair share of games. I just wonder what people you are referring to that question if they can reload year after year? What does it take to prove that, but, 40 years of doing exactly what's being questioned? I'm sorry, but, there was a considerable gap in talent between the 2 teams the past 2 years. Mayfield has a 4-0 all-time record vs them and I have a hard time believing it's anything more than a NKy slant, plain and simple.

Which is a good argument against either Beechwood or Mayfield being voted number one based on how they finished the year before. That leaves how people feel they will do this year based on what they have returning. That's as it should be, for either one. You seem to have quite the inferiority complex or envy going when it comes to NKY.

No question Mayfield has dominated Beechwood in the past.

I can guarantee you one thing, this is not a NKY slant. I am the NKY representative in the 1A rankings and like you I believe Mayfield should be number one but I was out flanked by members of the rankings panel that live outside of NKY.

Most of us are familiar with Bw and May, tell us more about the rest of the field or are these 2 expected to be head and shoulders above the rest?

Beechwood #1 Mayfield #1 , I would almost bet my house that one of these teams will be the state champ. Lets see how both of these teams jell during the season then say about October we might have a pretty good idea whats going to happen. Mayfield's defense will be as stout as it was last year and my main question is has BW made up enough ground from last year to beat Mayfield? Plus, beat Mayfield on the road.

No inferiority complex here. No envy either. What would Mayfield have to be envy of, considering past history. My problem lies with someone making a statement that some people are unsure they can reload, being a small school and I do take offense to that considering there history of doing it year after year. At the same time, these same people feel like Beechwood has no problem doing it year after year, as if they've proven anything more than Mayfield has. Huh, what am I missing here. I think saying it's a NKy slant may be worded wrong. I think it may be more of a Western Ky lack of respect slant. I don't mean that towards anyone, just that teams from Western Ky are typically alot less known or given the benefit of the doubt in comparison to teams in the triangle area of the state. Either way, it's cool. They'll have there chance to show it on the field.

Mayfield is the defending state champs. They should be pre-season #1.

I know you might be stirring the pot, but I have never understood that line of thinking. If you win a state title then graduate every person who ever played the previous season, you automatically go to #1?...

And that appears to be the case. Mayfield might be #1 (now or eventually) but they aren't a guaranteed champion. They have several question marks that will have to be answered as the season goes along.

Let's see ... Owensboro Catholic is ranked fourth in 2A. Paducah Tilghman is third in 3A, as is Lone Oak in 4A. Bowling Green is ranked #1 and Christian County is fifth in 5A.

Exactly where is the lack of respect for western Kentucky?

You also have Henderson County at #9 in 6A.

Well, there you go. You have 7 ranked teams in all of west ky out of a possible 60 spots. Whereas, you have 27 out of 60 from the triangle areas. Do more teams from the west deserve a ranking, I don't know, but, I don't think all the 27 deserve it either. And, really, this isn't the point. IMO, if the roles were reversed and Beechwood kicked the crap out of Mayfield the last 2 years and Mayfield had what Beechwood had returning and Beechwood lost what Mayfield did, it wouldn't justify a Mayfield #1 ranking, like it does Beechwood. It just wouldn't and that's a fact...

The "triangle" has more population and more schools, too. Madisonville is in the 4A rankings and Warren Central is in 5A, so that's at least nine teams from the west. There may be more, as I was just listing the ones that were near the top.

Tell me ... who isn't ranked that should be?
