These look about right. I can't really argue with any of them.

The "triangle" has more population and more schools, too. Madisonville is in the 4A rankings and Warren Central is in 5A, so that's at least nine teams from the west. There may be more, as I was just listing the ones that were near the top.

Tell me ... who isn't ranked that should be?

Maybe Caldwell, maybe Murray, maybe Crittenden, maybe Owensboro.. Maybe none of those, so, I really don't need your analysis of why they aren't. If you read my last response that you pasted, then you would see that I clearly stated I don't know that anymore deserve to be ranked or not and that isn't the point. I still believe if the roles were reversed with Beechwood and Mayfield, that Beechwood would, without a doubt, have been #1.. The people voting on this would point to the last 2 years and say Beechwood hammered Mayfield the last 2 yrs and until Mayfield proves they can beat them, then Beechwood is #1.. These same people now saying what happened last year has nothing to do with this year would be using the prior years results as there point of reason. Just saying, the Beechies would have been given the benefit of the doubt, moreso than Mayfield with, imo, no justification for it.

Well one good thing about it is that if both take care of business they can decide it on the field rendering all opinions meaningless. From a personel opinion, I prefer to have Bw ranked above us. That should keep this younger version of the Cards from believing that they can take it easy. It should make them work harder, gives them a added goal to focus, ect, ect, ... and the end result should be a better team and frankly there is no shame in being ranked 2nd to a program like Bw that has been the states 1A darling for the last couple of decades. I say let Bw bear the burden of #1 and lets focus on ending there which is a very real possibility. I'm not sure how good we will be, espically early but this team clearly has substantial talent and alot of potential. Next years team is one of those teams like the 2010 team where I watched them for years knowing they would be special and maybe by late this season they will become that team this year but its hard to say til we see how they mature

Quit griping, then ...

Or maybe, just maybe, the BGP rankings panel looks at what both teams are putting on the field this year and not what happened in 2009 and 2010.

It's not a gripe, it's an opinion and I have the right to one as much as you. That's what these boards are for. And to answer your reply, and maybe not, which is my opinion.

Caldwell is led by a frosh qb and I think that will hurt them at very least early. Murray graduated everyone including the water boy so I don't think they will be ranked atleast not early. Crittenden looks like they will be solid but I'm not thinking solid enough yet for rank. I would not preseason rank any of these 3. I am pulling for Murray to be undefeated when they play Mayfield. Murray has not lost a regular season game for what seems like 20 years and I would love to see May have the chance to end that streak.

Mayfield will learn alot about themselves Fri when they scrimmage a Milan, TN team that returns a ton from a semi finalist run last year. If the Cards can keep it close I will be pleased.

Surely someone out there can tell us what to expect from Louisville HC, they are ranked high and my Cards will have to worry about them before any battle with #1 ranked Bw

You also have Henderson County at #9 in 6A.

Fort Campbell #8 in 3A also.

I never said any of those should be ranked. I simply said maybe or maybe not. I also didn't need a breakdown or analysis of those particular teams because frankly, I have no idea one way or the other and that wasn't my point to start with. I thought I explained that, but, maybe not. I really don't care what any of them are ranked at this point, just making an opinion that if the roles were reversed the last 2 years and Mayfield had a loaded roster returning, Beechwood would still receive the #1 nod and the premise would be 1) "Until Mayfield proves they can beat them, Beechwood's the team to beat" or 2) "Beechwood has proven year after year that they reload, not rebuild" or something along those lines and I still 100% believe that's the way it would have gone down..

My surprise team in class A is Harlan. Lost 3 players off last yrs team that started a ton of sophomores. Will be a much tougher out for Hazard then in yrs past.

So this explanation ...

I can guarantee you one thing, this is not a NKY slant. I am the NKY representative in the 1A rankings and like you I believe Mayfield should be number one but I was out flanked by members of the rankings panel that live outside of NKY.
... means nothing to you?

Doesn't change my opinion on how it would be viewed, if that's what you mean. Like anything else, you can always steer an argument one direction or the other to suit an agenda or to justify an opinion.

Westsider, I would like an honest answer from you. Had Beechwood beaten Mayfield by a 76-14 margin the last 2 years, been 4-0 or 5-0(whichever it is) all-time vs Mayfield and Beechwood had similar players returning that Mayfield has and Mayfield had similar players returning that Beechwood had. Who would have gotten your preseason #1 vote?

You may say Mayfield, but, I contend that you would be in a small minority that would do this. Now, is it because Beechwood comes from NKy and typically NKy football is considered stronger than Western Ky football across the state or would it be because they actually feel Beechwood has the better talent returning?

I only give honest answers ...

Beechwood, from the sound of it, has most of their skill people back and should have a pretty good team. Mayfield has to replace a quarterback that ran a high-powered offense that also lost most of the offensive line and most of the receivers. I think it's fair to say that Mayfield isn't likely to be nearly as explosive as they were last year, and that was the thing that set them apart from the rest of Class A.

Frankly, the 4-0 stuff doesn't matter. Maybe the last two factor in, but the other two meetings were in 1995 and 2002. They're meaningless.

I can see an argument for either way, and it's likely that Beechwood and Mayfield are again the top two teams in Class A.

You're simply arguing generalities ... score, history, returning talent, etc. I suspect the BGP bunch is looking more at specific players lost and coming back and how they will develop as a team.

That's where we'll just have to agree to disagree. For the most part, I agree, but, there are those certain teams who get more benefit of the doubt.. If Highlands wins the title again this year, 48-0, which is certainly possible, but, they lose 17 of 21 starters and 95% of there scoring options and Team 2, who lost 48-0 in the title game, had 20 of 22 starters returning, would that team get the nod over Highlands? I say not..

If Mayfield is 50 percent as good as they were last year they should be #1. From what I can remember no one came close to beating them.

Again, you're talking theoretical and generalities ... I doubt the BGP bunch is dealing with those.

And the Highlands example you mention isn't even comparable to this one. Not even close.

Lexington Christian won the state title in 2009 and suffered some losses. Mayfield was pounded by LCA in the championship game and had some pretty good pieces coming back. And guess what? Mayfield was ranked #1 at the start of last season. I guess that was anti-Lexington bias.
