June 8, 201115 yr There was a lot more to the Civil War than just the slavery issue.... History books have been proven wrong numerous times..
June 8, 201115 yr Could you document these please? Many times on this thread a few have stated thusly but not documented them. As I posted somewhere back in this thread she was wrong on many accounts in her story and it was obvious she didn't grasp it right after the tour when she was asked the questions. I did... post 96.. Where is your documents ??
June 8, 201115 yr There was a lot more to the Civil War than just the slavery issue..... Not when you are black there isn't.
June 8, 201115 yr Boston University history professor Brendan McConville said, “Basically when Paul Revere was stopped by the British, he did say to them, ‘Look, there is a mobilization going on that you’ll be confronting,’ and the British are aware as they’re marching down the countryside, they hear church bells ringing — she was right about that — and warning shots being fired. That’s accurate.” In fact, Revere’s own account of the ride in a 1798 letter seems to back up Palin’s claim. Revere describes how after his capture by British officers, he warned them “there would be five hundred Americans there in a short time for I had alarmed the Country all the way up.” http://bostonherald.com.nyud.net/news/us_politics/view.bg?articleid=1343353 http://nationaljournal.com/dailyfray/the-wikipedia-war-of-paul-revere-and-sarah-palin-20110606 Seems some followers of Sarah Palin are changing the Wickipedia writings on Paul Revere's ride to fit her answer from last week. From the very historian you cited: “It was an extremely complicated situation which she sort of regurgitated in a garbled way,” Boston University’s Brendan McConville said. “It has been, as an American history professor, disconcerting to realize that no one seems to know what happened in this iconic event.” http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/paul-reveres-ride-dont-know-much-about-history/ That is a great article and interview with a great summation IMO: The “basically” is doing a hell of a lot of work in “basically, on the whole, Sarah Palin got her history right.” In fact, she got every single disputed fact wrong. No, Revere wasn’t warning the British, which was the central fact in dispute. (Which, incidentally, I don’t think Palin believed. Rather, I’d bet anything that she simply misspoke and stuck with her story when obscure bits of history seemed to prove her right.) No, Revere wasn’t ringing bells and firing shots. On the other hand, bells were being rung and shots were being fired. Did Palin actually know this and just jumbled it up? I can’t say. No, the ride wasn’t motivated by protecting gun rights. But, yes, it was partly motivated by securing the guns themselves–which were about to be needed for a fight that was long brewing. But it’s also fair to say that the critics, who were basing their understanding of the Revere ride on a poem, found out how little they knew, too.
June 8, 201115 yr You guys want me to shed a little light on Paul Revere? According to my tour guide in Boston on last Thursday (who gave a fantastic tour by the way) He told us the real story of Paul Revere while we were standing in the Grainery (spelling) Cemetery where he is buried... Paul Revere was somewhat of a Renaissance man in his time, having many trades. He was definitely a patriot, however he wasn't as extremely well known during his lifetime (such as John Adams, Sam Adams, George Washington, John Hancock, Ben Franklin, and etc.) as it seems he was because of the story we know today. He definitely played a roll on his midnight ride, however he wouldn't have become famous for it if it wasn't for many years later when Longfellow decided to use his story for propaganda to get young men to join the Union in the Civil War. Something along the lines of, "You can go from a common man to a hero, just like Paul Revere from this poem if you join the Union". If it wasn't for Longfellow's poem, we very well wouldn't know Paul Revere to be the hero that we know him as. Two men set out on horseback that night and headed separate directions. Paul Revere and a man (can't remember his first name, Henry maybe) Dawes. A third eventually joined the cause and road to warn people as well, but I was never told his name. As Paul Revere rode from town to town, he did so in secrecy, knocking on doors and warning individuals one by one. A common misconception was that he would yell, "The British are coming, the British are coming." This isn't true, because technically at the time they were all British because they hadn't won their independence, but also because many British Regulars would already be lodged in those towns. He wouldn't have wanted them to know he was going around doing this. He was eventually caught and probably would have been hung if the British regulars didn't hear gunshots in the background and decided to let him go, for some reason. There are probably more facts to the story than that, but this was the story that was told by our tour guide and he seemed extremely knowledgeable, more than just reading from a script. Paul Revere was certainly a hero, but not in his time...it wasn't until Longfellow's poem until he was truly considered one in American History. Sorry for the book, just the only time I can really put together a good post in the P&R forum and wanted to take full advantage of it lol That is my understanding of Paul Revere as well, based on a book I read. Could have easily been Dawes that we all know.
June 8, 201115 yr There was a lot more to the Civil War than just the slavery issue.... History books have been proven wrong numerous times.. That was the root of the other issues that sprang out of the conflict. "State's Rights, Expansion, Tariffs"; It all eventually went back to that single issue.
June 8, 201115 yr ^ That outside-the-beltway summary seems as fair and balanced an analysis as I have seen.
June 8, 201115 yr That was the root of the other issues that sprang out of the conflict. "State's Rights, Expansion, Tariffs"; It all eventually went back to that single issue. Absolutely. I wonder when slavery would have ended if the South had won the war.
June 8, 201115 yr Well, I'm not here to say she's racist, but one can certainly wonder, given her aversion to addressing or even acknowledging the issues that face Native Americans in Alaska while she was governor. If true, that's interesting since her husband is part Native American.
June 8, 201115 yr Absolutely. I am quite sure he spoke to many people just like this on the campaign trail. Those were the people he needed to convince to vote for him. I am sure he has spoken with more of your neighbors than Palin has spoken to inner city blacks. I am thinking she avoids the inner cities all together. You may be right, but I completely disagree.

So "basically" Revere went on a ride to warn folks, there was shots fired and bell ringing, there was mention of guns. There was warnings to the British and the colonist. So "basically" it's not really known exactly how all these events took place and in what order.. As I said before, Palin hacked it up, but I just don't understand why the left is so concerned about it.. I think most folks, including Palin, know the "basics" of the legend of Paul Revere's famous ride.. Is it really such a big deal.. Just seems childish to me the way the left is whining about it and now they are all experts on the event...

It bothers me when watching the video clip that she gets off of a tour and immediately messes up the story the way she does. What will she do when she comes out of a meeting with the Chinese Premier? :idunno:
