June 4, 201115 yr I have tired really hard to like Dusty, but his idiotic managing just keeps me from doing that. Today is another perfect example, or maybe I'm just too stupid to understand. Maybe somebody can explain it to me. Pay no mind to the results of his decision today, but just the decision by itself. On Tuesday night Dusty let's his AAA pitcher bat, while trailing 4-1, and the Reds with the bases loaded, and no outs in the bottom of the 4th inning. Dusty's answer to that was that the bullpen was just too overworked, and he didn't have the pitchers available to finish the game. Fast forward to today's game. The Reds are winning 4-2 in the bottom of the 7th. The Reds have their ace on the mound, and he has thrown only 88 pitches, and Dusty decides he needs to pinch hit for him. Dusty had just used Ondrusek, Masset, and Cordero for 1 inning a piece the night before, and the Reds have Travis Wood going tomorrow, and he knows more than likely he'll probably have to go to the bullpen again tomorrow by the 7th inning. Dusty simply has no clue when it comes to managing a pitching staff. There is no rhyme or reason to his decision, and it absolutely drives me crazy. I have been saying stuff like this for 2 years about the "toothpick" and everybody thinks that I am being too critical of him. Imo he is not a good manager in making quick decisions. He goes by the numbers in everything he does and is extremely hard headed when he makes a decision. Good player's manager only goes so far and I don't think that he will ever lead this team deep into the playoffs.

I have always said that if you condition your starters to only go so many pitches you will never get any more than that out of them. Look at the way the Atlanta staff under Cox and Mazzone handled their pitchers when they had Maddux, Smoltz and Glavine. They were notorious for the amount of throwing that they did between starts and they never had problems going deep into ballgames and never had arm problems. I just think that starting pitchers today are babied and 100 pitches seems to be the barometer that managers go by to pull the starter. Now I know that there are bullpens set up so that you have a setup man and a closer but I think you could get more pitches out of your starter if you conditioned them better, jmo.

It was just plain stupid to pinch hit for Cueto with him only having 88 pitches. Dusty complains how tired the bullpen is, yet he takes his starter, who is dealing, out after 88 pitches? Makes a lot of sense to me...
June 5, 201115 yr In front of a home crowd, you destroy one of the best young arms in the game from the plate only to give up 5 runs in the top of the 8th and claim yet another extra inning defeat. Yes, that sounds like the Reds of yore.

No sense working your bullpen more than it's needed, especially when you will probably have to use them again tomorrow. Dusty is an idiot. End of story. I don't care for Baker much either, but I had no problem with this decision. Cueto's coming off a CG, where he threw 116 pitches, you've got a big lead, there is no reason to tax him at that point. Your bullpen had found it's groove, and you need 6 outs. If you can't trust your BP to get six outs, they don't belong there. Sure, it blew up, but hindsight is 20/20. I mean think about it, that hit stretched a 3 run lead to a 5 run lead. That pushes the Reds chances of winning from about 70% to over 98% according to win probability stats on Fangraphs. Bullpens blow up five run leads from time to time, that's not on the manager, that's on the player.

Cueto was only at 88 pitches, running him out for the 8th inning is hardly taxing him. The bullpen had just pitched 3 innings on Friday night. You have Wood going on Sunday where chances are you're going to have to use your bullpen another 3 innings. Your ace is dealing. It was a stupid, stupid decision, and there is no defending it. When you over work your bullpen they are going to blow leads, and that's on the manager, and not the player.
