Cueto was only at 88 pitches, running him out for the 8th inning is hardly taxing him. The bullpen had just pitched 3 innings on Friday night. You have Wood going on Sunday where chances are you're going to have to use your bullpen another 3 innings. Your ace is dealing. It was a stupid, stupid decision, and there is no defending it. When you over work your bullpen they are going to blow leads, and that's on the manager, and not the player. Sorry, but I will agree to disagree. What would be stupid is overworking Cueto at this juncture with a 5 run lead in the eighth. You don't just look one game, when Cueto throws 116 pitches in his last start and you have to take that into consideration. If Masset, Bray, and whoever can't go 2 days in a row, and get 6 outs, that's on them. Call it stupid all you want, but using a PH, increasing your lead from 3 to 5 in the bottom of the 7th is the right thing to do every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Now, not pinch hitting for Roenicke. That's stupid.

June 5, 201115 yr Quite simply pinch hitting worked and Cueto had arm troubles the last two years. I don't mind hitting for him at all. Masset being pulled was a problem though.
June 5, 201115 yr I have tired really hard to like Dusty, but his idiotic managing just keeps me from doing that. Today is another perfect example, or maybe I'm just too stupid to understand. Maybe somebody can explain it to me. Pay no mind to the results of his decision today, but just the decision by itself. On Tuesday night Dusty let's his AAA pitcher bat, while trailing 4-1, and the Reds with the bases loaded, and no outs in the bottom of the 4th inning. Dusty's answer to that was that the bullpen was just too overworked, and he didn't have the pitchers available to finish the game. Fast forward to today's game. The Reds are winning 4-2 in the bottom of the 7th. The Reds have their ace on the mound, and he has thrown only 88 pitches, and Dusty decides he needs to pinch hit for him. Dusty had just used Ondrusek, Masset, and Cordero for 1 inning a piece the night before, and the Reds have Travis Wood going tomorrow, and he knows more than likely he'll probably have to go to the bullpen again tomorrow by the 7th inning. Dusty simply has no clue when it comes to managing a pitching staff. There is no rhyme or reason to his decision, and it absolutely drives me crazy. I 100% agree with all that you said. I highlighted the last sentence bc that sums it up perfectly. Dusty has no clue on handling pitching at any facet of the game, using pitchers in othetr roles, mind boggling pitching decisions and his reasoning. The man probably has trouble finding the pitching mound on a field. Another failure of his in pitchers comes in conditioning(or lack there of). Just look at the talent that he had, especially at the top of the rotation when in Chicago. Woods, Pryor both went down and out with arm troubles during that time. This Reds staff has had more than it's share of arm troubles under Dusty's watch. Either he has no idea about any phase of the pitching game, including conditioning arms, hiring pitching coaches or both! Ultimtely it falls on the manager responsibility. At times I think that Dusty knowledge of handling pitchers begins and ends with a mechanical pitching machine.

June 5, 201115 yr Can't wait to hear Dusty's excuse on why he lifted Cueto. I'm sure it will be lame as always. I quit listening to Dusty's reasoning/excuses on anything, especially pitching.
