How many feeder schools does LC have?

It would be a challenge. I don't know of any basketball teams that have their feeder schools run the same style of offense as the varsity. Coaches change so often at the middle school level that it's difficult to instill a standard scheme.

 

AAU coaches are going to do their own thing.

 

All of the Holmes teams (varsity, jv, freshman, 8th grade, and 7th grade) run the same pressing and 2-3 match up zone defense, as well as uptempo offense.

 

When I interviewed and met with Coach Booher during the Holmes-West Jessamine football game this past season, he mentioned that one of the first things he'd be doing is meeting with the coaches of those levels to help install the new offensive and defensive scheme. This is why he was so successful at Shelby Valley. He was very involved with all levels both on and off the court. His philosophy was the longer the kids are in the "system" the better they become as time wears on and they aren't constantly worrying about "change." The last thing you want a kid to do is over-think things. Simplify it, and it also helps develop depth because everyone is running the same sets and schemes at both ends of the court. The attrition that Holmes faced last season throughout the season and the different kids constantly stepping up that were buried at the end of the bench at the beginning of the season is a perfect example of why this works.

 

With a program like Covcath though, it is much harder to implement a "system." With the numerous parochial schools in nky at the middle school level that split between Covcath, Holy Cross, St. Henry, and even Beechwood it's tough to get all of the coaches on the same page....Especially when they are playing against one another in the middle school league.

Funny how someone thinking the "t" and "r" word is from Lexington. I don't think for one second that the "r" happens at CCH. And for a kid to transfer from an Ohio school is comical. If he is a blue chipper, he aint coming to a NKY school. If so, why? This is the perception from the rest of the state of Ky has on NKY in all their sports that NKY "r"s their kids, especially if they might so happen to win. Laughable!!!

NKY has lost a lot more talent to Cincy than they've seen coming across the river. As much as some like to use the "R" word on here, most schools in this area lose more than they gain.

 

Covcath is a prime example. Look at some of the athletes over the years that have left and went to another school and been very successful. The Romes brothers and Sorrell both come to mind.

 

Schools like Holmes and Newport see kids leave and go across the river all the time that were very good at the middle school and/or freshman level.

Agree with your post. Didn't get to see Holmes personally this year, so I can't comment on different kids stepping up, but think that the philosophy as described is generally a good idea.

 

Also understand your point about the system being much harder to implement at Covington Catholic (or in a larger population center such as the Cincy area) due to the number and division and of the parochial schools.

There is some speculation that the young coach from Moeller is the leader.

 

I heard that the week the job came open. My guess is if CCH thought he was a great candidate they would have already pulled the trigger. Maybe he's the leader because they didn't get the great candidates they thought they would. In all honesty it will be a surprise to me if they hire a Freshman coach for their head coach. That job is a really good job. One that I think shoud attract far better candidates than Freshman coaches.

You have much more knowledge of the 9th than I, and I respect your opinion. I especially agree with the bolded points, and did so at the time of my original post. I was just trying to address Voice of Reason's post of what could be added to the list of pros and cons.

 

I did, however, take issue with the implication that it was laughable that I (and the rest of the state in general) have the perception that, "in all their sports that NKY "r"s, their kids, especially if they might so happen to win."

 

I thought the Holmes-Central game was one of the best state tournament games I've ever seen, and didn't complain about the outcome.

 

I've never thought of NKY as a recruiting hot bed, but have thought it would have great potential to be one. If tons of talent were coming in from Cincinnati, the 9th would have probably won a few more titles than 2.

 

 

Four points I'd like to make for clarity:

 

1. People have legitimate reasons for moving, and hence transferring schools.

2. I feel that, to some extent, being recruited is acceptable if it makes a positive difference in everyone's lives and nothing underhanded is going on.

3. Many times, parents and children recruit themselves to schools.

4. We could write novels about what's right and wrong when 1, 2, and 3 begin to overlap.

 

You won’t find me complaining about an outcome unless it is proven or blatantly obvious that something very wrong occurred. I’ve watched and enjoyed plenty of great basketball by teams filled with t’s and r’s from both sides of the spectrum and have only left with a game with a bad feeling a handful of times in over a decade of watching. Rarely (if ever) do these complaints have to do with a transfer or recruit.

I beg to differ, there is no such thing as Lexington Catholic Middle School. If you know there is one please give me the address, I have been trying to find it for years!

It sounds like there are 6 candidates.

 

A freshman coach from Moeller(heard good things about this guy).

A JV coach from LaSalle.

Michael Bradley.

 

Not sure about the other three but it sounds like Coach Faust has passed on this job.

Nope. Meant as a compliment. We always seem to have a decent idea of who is in the final pool of candidates. Too many people know, thus, too many people talk. Hasn't really happened as much this time.

Money is always going to be an issue at a Catholic school and that will limit the pool of candidates. That is a big reason why many of them promote from within. Most public school teacher/coach would take a 15 to 20 K salary cut. So that pretty much limits the pool to other NKY parochials and GCL guys. And for many of them, they have been at their respective schools long enough where they have a few other jobs/titles to make a few extra bucks, which if they make a move those extras may not be available.

Give me some examples of coaches that you think would apply. Do you think there's something special or magical about CCH that would cause the majority of top coaches to take a pay cut and impact their pension?

Heard some scuttlebutt at the gym (and what better place is there to pick up solid information???) that Ryan Schrand is in the mix. Does anyone know if Ryan is interested in the position and if so, whether he is a finalist?
