Got back in the gym on MLK Day after a long hiatus. I have always been pretty fit so letting myself go for 4-6 months didnt seem like a big deal until I turned 40 this past summer. The belly fat comes much quicker and is harder to shed that is for sure.

Started eating 5 small meals a day and it helps me not over eat like used to do. Instead of a footlong sub I get the 6 inch. I mix in a Beverly Protein shake in between meals and snack on Almonds at my desk around 3pm instead of grabbing candy or visiting the cafeteria for some Butterscotch pudding.

As far as excercise, I usually hit the stairmaster at the gym for 20 minutes doing intervals, then I will go hit the heavy bag for 10 minutes. I normally hit for 2 minutes and rest for 2 minutes. I finish my workout doing some light dumbell work with lots of reps.

I weighed in at 231 lbs at 6'2 last Monday and today I was at 226lbs and I feel so much better. I havent eaten any junkfood, cut back the sodium and sugar and in 7 days Im down 5 lbs. Most of it I am sure is water weight but one of the most important things I have noticed is I am sleeping longer which is very important. Instead of getting 4.5 to 5 hrs sleep straight I have been getting 5.5 to 6 straight and feel much better.

Sleep, eat right and excercise. Increase your metabolism by eating more small meals if you can throughout the day.

Anyone ever done something like this?

This past weekend, me and a couple of the runners from our Bourbon Chase team has talked about doing this. Still up in the air? Looks very difficult!

This is something that I've been asked to do and would love too. I've been working out and getting in better shape, so by the time it came around, I feel like I could. But after having ACL surgery, I pretty much stay away from doing anything like this. Probably just a mental thing, but I tell myself, its just not worth it.

Not to change to subject but I feel like the biggest difference that I have made in my life is the way I eat. I feel like that has been 75% of the battle. The other 25% is the workouts. I have recently started incorporating fruit smoothies into my diet. I got hooked after I visited a Smoothie King a couple time. Now I make them at home after workouts. Anyone else make smoothies? And if you could post your favorite recipe.

Here's mine.

Berry Healthy Breakfast Smoothie

Ingredients:

* 1/2 cup blueberries

* 1/2 cup strawberries

* 1/2 cup blackberries (I sub out the blackberries and put half of a banana in instead)

* 1 medium carrot

* 1 cup low-fat milk

* 1 cup pomegranate (cranberry is an okay substitute)

* 2 cups ice

Easily 2 servings, but don’t feel too guilty if you finish it by yourself, it is that good.

Signed up for the Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston, SC on March 31st. That race is going to be packed.

That sounds interesting and would be an easy way to get some fruit in my diet. I might have to give this a try. Does it come out all chunky and hard to drink?

No not really. Just make sure you have a good blender and let it run for about a minute.

I also add about a tablespoon of 'local" honey to this. It's supposed to help with the allergies.

I like smoothies, but thats a lot of sugar.

What would you substitute to take that down some?
