January 14, 201214 yr Author Since my wife and kids could not have cared less, I had to tell someone b/c I am pretty pumped. I wanted to max out for the first time in forever, maybe since college conditioning. Anyway, I have been using Wendler's 5/3/1 program since August and had used a max off of what I thought I was at after doing 3 rep maxes. I started in August and am testing this week. So far I got 375 on squat (below parallel, I had someone watch) and yesterday I benched 300 for the first time since college. Now, those numbers aren't special, but for me they are. I deadlift Saturday and shoulder press on Sunday. After that, I deload for a week, and then start training for the tough mudder, which will kill my strength. I'm hoping to pull at least 400. Shoulder press...well that's another beast. I'm terrible at it. I'm doing this at 215 lbs. Like I said, I've seen guys absolutely crush my numbers, but for me, this is the strongest that I've been in a long time.Impressive numbers. How big of a guy are you if you don't mind me asking? I did Welder's program for a while and saw pretty good gains with as well.

I'm about 6'1 215-219 depending on how the weekend went. These numbers will drop off of a precipice as I start running and doing agility stuff in preparation for the Tough Mudder. I've really let my cardio slide the past 3 months. I've just done circuits at the end of working out. I figure, and plan on, being at about 205 by the time I run on April 14th due to the increase in conditioning.

I was feeling pretty weak after reading your previous post but you are considerably bigger then me so I don't feel as bad. Good luck with the tough mudder. One of the guys I lift with did the one in Indy and said it was pretty rough. Mainly due to the fact it was really cold that day.
January 16, 201214 yr Those of you that did 5/3/1, how many cycles did you go through. Reason I ask is because I'm in my 3rd cycle and still hitting 12-15 reps on my last set. Taking it 2-3 short of failure. I know you are supposed to low ball your 1rm but I was just curious as some of your reps on the last set.

My last set in the 5/3/1 day for bench, for examply was 270. I feel like I could have gotten it about 4 times.
January 16, 201214 yr Just did this year's Spartacus workout in this month's Men's Health. Good, quick, full-body routine. Not as good as the original, but still a solid workout. I also signed up for a Sprint Tri in Tunica for mid-May last night. Amazing to think how short a .25 mile, 12 mile bike, and 3.1 run seems now.
January 16, 201214 yr Was watching Gator Boys last night. One dude is a double tri athlete. All distances are doubled. Yikes!

Okay...so you're over 4 months in. I might have low balled a bit too much. Today was week 1 of the 3rd cycle and I squatted 325lb for 15 with a couple to spare. Pulled 415 for 15 in my week of 1's in the last cycle. My reps seem to be jumping the more my body acclimates.
January 16, 201214 yr Amazing: Carolyn Linn said her interest has been piqued by something called the Arch to Arc Challenge, a 289-mile triathlon. It begins with an 87-mile run from the Marble Arch in London to the Cliffs of Dover, then a 22-mile swim across the English Channel, followed by a 180-mile bike to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Here is the actual website and what they say about it: This is a challenge that will test the body and mind of the most experienced ultra endurance athletes on the planet. The event starts with an 87 mile run from London's Marble Arch to the Dover coast, then the athlete must swim across the English Channel to the French coast, and finally the athlete finishes with a 181 mile bike from Calais to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. For this challenge, the clock starts at Marble Arch and stops at Arc de Triomphe. Only 9 athletes in history have completed the challenge solo. Can you be Enduroman No 10? Or can your relay team join only 4 other teams in history to have completed the challenge?

I may give it another go this year though. That said I think if you are getting 15 reps on your last set you way underestimated you 1RM. I would make an adjustment so you aren't hitting over 8 reps on that last set.

January 16, 201214 yr I probably did. I based my initial 1RM's off my maxes after not doing anything for a couple months. I'm gonna probably make a 20lb jump on the lower body and 10lb on the uppers starting for the next cycle instead of the prescribed 10 and 5
