October 5, 201114 yr It's in Atlanta and that's all I know, well that and I gotta buy a bike for Christmas that is up to par for her.Is it an actual Ironman Event?
October 5, 201114 yr Is it an actual Ironman Event? I don't know. She has to run, bike, and swim. It may just be a triathlon. I didn't really pay attention to the difference. All I know is that she wakes me up every morning at 5am when she gets up to train before the boys need to get ready for school.

October 8, 201114 yr 31 days away now and I am ready for it to get here. Still nervous about the swim but I have worked hard at it these past 18 months to get to where I am to today. Did my swim workout this morning and have a track workout scheduled for this evening. Felt good on the bike last night but still overall I suck at it and do not enjoy it. Saturday is the day I have been working towards. The dreaded long day. I will be doing a 1.8 mile open water swim, 75 bike, and 16 mile run. Hopefully I can be done in 8 1/2 - 9 hours. From there it is taper and recover until the race. That makes my knees and hips hurt just thinking about it. What are you taking in the way of supplements, if any?
October 8, 201114 yr Weighed in at 248 this morning, 62 lbs down from where I started on June 14 (310). Still walking 5 miles a day and trying to bike at least 7 miles a day, though, I've run into time constraints, with all the bowling pins I'm juggling. Also, it turns out, that if you lose weight too fast, you're uric acid level increases, which, in my case, causes gout attacks. I've had more attacks in the last 3 weeks than I've had in the last 36 years, when diagnosed back in high school. I've come too far to stop now, so I eliminated meat and other restricted items from my diet a couple of weeks ago, though I did have that Bourbon Barrel Beer one night. The night before last, I simply ate carrots that had been cooked with a pork roast in the crock pot and bang!. Five hours later, I was in a full blown attack. Crap! :madman: My doctor is on vacation so I can't get into see him until the 18th, though I think he'll put me on Zyloprim (allopurinol). :irked: I hate maintenance drugs. The majority of protein I am getting, now, is from peanut butter, edamame, and what dark green veggies I eat. I've started working eggs back into my diet, too, and am looking to maybe add yogurt and such, to get more protein. Note, still no complex carbs, with a few exceptions. I still get most of what carbs I need through my veggies. BTW, Morning Star Farm's faux chicken patties taste like breaded veal cutlets to me. Their really good. :thumb:

From there it is taper and recover until the race. Started my swim in Kentucky Lake to a white-capping breeze at 7:45 a.m. 71 degree water temp. Took me about 1 hr. 10 minutes. We took our time transitioning out of our wetsuits and biked back in to town to the 10 mph SW breeze. Went along Stateline Road and through Hazel, KY before coming back to the house to drop off the bikes. Never really hit it hard on the bike. Almost 5 hours on the bike, but 15-20 minutes of that were a couple of breaks. We started running a little after 2:00 p.m. By now the temperature was mid-80s and I was not looking forward to it at all. We had water set out at almost every mile marker. We would jog to the water and then walk for a couple of minutes. Got to mile 10 and refueled at the house and did the last 6 miles through town. I was getting weaker as the sun was beating me down, but I managed through it. In total it took me 9 hours and 45 minutes from start to finish. 7:45 a.m. - 5:33 p.m. (when I got back to the house) First time I have ever done a near 10 hour workout  The hard part of my training is officially over! Taper and enjoy the big day now.
October 10, 201114 yr That makes my knees and hips hurt just thinking about it. What are you taking in the way of supplements, if any?I do not take supplements. I always eat relatively well (with the exception of chocolate). The biggest key during my events is staying regimented. On the bike every 15 minutes I take in either water, an energy gel, gatorade, honey-stinger, or clif bar. Shooting to take in 400 calories an hour. With it being warmer the longer we were on the bike Saturday I started taking in something every 10 minutes. The biggest thing is just staying hydrated. I do take these pills called Endurolytes to help with cramping at the top of every hour on the bike.

Gained 7 lbs but I started back today and plan on really focusing on cardio.
October 11, 201114 yr Gotcha. I'd be curious to know which event she is doing and the distance of it. Got some more info. It looks like it is near Augusta. They will be swimming the Savannah river. I'm not sure, but swimming 2 miles or whatever it is in a river known for its alligators, doesn't make me want to do it.

The swim is supposed to be one of, if not the easiest on the circuit as you are with the current the whole 1.2 miles. Plus it more than likely will be wetsuit legal. Bike has some flats and some hills. Challenging, but not difficult. Run is supposed to be super flat. The biggest variable is the temperature. If it is like this year it will not be much of an issue. Do you up the difficulty level on the swim for having to dodge gators?
