Fitness goals?

Strongly considering signing up to "ultra" the 2012 Bourbon Chase with members from my team this year and last year. I've never even ran a mini before. This is nuts.

The local news did a health segment this morning and they said the average person should eat 2,000 calories a day.

No one is built the same. You have to figure out your maintenance calories and adjust from their. The more active you are the higher your intake needs to be. Someone who isn't active at all doesn't need 2000 calories. Also too many think 2000 calories of whatever. It has to be the right 2000 calories.

Going to watch a good friend compete in the Steelhead 1/2 IM here in a few weeks. This could be the downfall of me...

I did some more fatlit type training on the treadmill this week but I've been having hip pains after I run. It could honestly be that my bad just isn't used to it but I don't know. I feel like my gate/technique is off somehow. I haven't ran hard, sprinted for a long distance in years. So I'm trying not to kill my body.

I've got it to where I'm stretching and jogging to warm up at around 5mph then starting out at 7pmh for a minute, then rest a minute at a fast walk, then 8 mph a minute, then same rest, up to 10 mph, and then descending the same way. It kicks my butt but I've been working my way up for the past month and I can really see improvement just in how long I can go and not want to die. I was ticked, I had more in my tank last night, but if I'd kept going my rear release valve would have likely given out.....

There is just not a cool time of the day right now. 6 miles was brutal this morning.
I'm in Emerald Isle, NC right now. Thursday morning I ran 8 miles and didn't think I was going to make it. So logically this morning I did 8 Yassos (essentially .5 miles repeats) and thought I was going to die. At least I had a nice view of the ocean.

One suggestion for running in the heat. You have to hydrate, obviously. Get a small bottle of water and freeze it. Put it out along your route the night before and it will be thawed by the time you run by it in the morning.

Went and watched a friend compete in the Steelhead Half IM this weekend. Unfortunately for her the swim was canceled but it was a pretty fun thing to watch. After watching it, if I can figure out the expenses I will be signing up for a half hopefully next spring/early summer.

I feel so inadequate against all this iron man stuff, but Mrs. S says I should be used to that. :irked:

Anyway, I actually have fitness goals, now, of sorts. I've adjusted my diet by reducing portion, meat, and carb intake. I'm not on any specific diet, per say, just trying to eat right, more or less. It's been 8 weeks since I started this journey and I'm up to walking 4 miles a day, have starting isometric training, primarily on my abs, and am down 30 lbs.

I tried running the last 100 yards the other day and my hips, knees, and ankles all screamed in unison, "Not yet, Fat Boy!!!!". I figure I need to lose at least another 30 before I try that again. :D

Congrats Swamprat on your weight loss. I too started watching what I ate and started out walking last year.

Keep up the hard work and the pounds will come off! Watching what you eat and walk/running I know for a fact works. It has for me! This time next year, you will be ready for the Disney Half Marathon.

That absolutely sucks. Why was it cancelled?

There are some smaller half-IMs that are relatively cheap out there. For the full thing there are cheaper versions, but I signed up for the IM brand as much as anything.

My training is still progressing, ok, I guess. Biked 61 and Ran 6 last Saturday. I have my training to around 11-14 hours a week right now. That is about the minimum you can do for IM training but I am having fun with it. Ready for it to get here. About 80 days out.

This week:

Monday: Morning - 1 hr swim; Evening - 1 hr spin

Tuesday: Morning - 6 mile run; Evening - 25 bike

Wednesday: Morning - 1 hr swim

Thursday: Morning - Interval Run 5 miles; Evening - Brick 25 mile bike/2 mile run

Friday: Recover

Saturday: Long brick 75 bike/8 mile run

I wasn't aware that the non-IM brands were cheaper. I will probably look into that for half distances at least. If I ever do a full though, I will be like you and sign up for the IM brand more than anything---can't get the tat if it wasn't an "actual" IM.

I'm going to go today or Friday and talk to the cycling shop about a bike but I probably won't pull the trigger until a few paychecks from now (this and swim lessons seem to be the biggest initial costs). Any advice on getting a bike?

The swim was canceled due to a heavy rip current. They wouldn't even allow small watercraft into the water so setting up the buoy's was impossible.

The training you are doing looks very doable. Thanks for sharing it.

You will be spending 1000s of miles and a lot of hours on your bike. Spend the extra money on it and go carbon. The bike makes a big difference. And obviously be fitted properly.
