When I think of a smashmouth team a few things come to mind:

1. Power set on offense- I formation, Power I, Wishbone, T formation, maybe even Wing-T.

2. Having a bread and butter run play (like an Off-tackle Power) that the coach doesn't care to call on 3rd and long or 4 & 5.

3. Maybe some option.

4. One old coach on the sideline that says everytime an incomplete pass is thrown, "Only 3 things can happen when you throw the ball and two of them are bad!"

5. Fans yelling "Pass the ball!!!" every time a run play only gets a yard or two.

 

For colleges, Stanford under Harbaugh was about as smashmouth as it gets these days I think. It was pretty cool to watch, I hope the new coach continues that style of ball. If I had a team I would want them to be "bad" enough to run one or two run plays (power and counter-gt) all game. I'd want to even tell the defense which side we were running too :lol:.

 

I love this post. I love to watch power run/option style football. As for the bolded lines on your first part. A former Raceland football coached repeated that line and lived by it. Larry Heck did not throw the ball, if Raceland passed the ball more than a couple of times a game then that was "air raid offense" :lol:. Heck also won and jmo was the one that took Raceland from a good football team most years and started the mind set of "Winning Tradition", where wins are expected in every game. Heck (when ask about his not passing the bal)l also told a reporter one time ..."when you have backs and a line like we have, when driving I won't even pass a car on the highway :lol:.

The comments on no. 5 on your list were also heard with regularity around Ram Stadium.

Actually I believe, especially in high school that sucsessful coaches will adapt what offense they run to what the level of talent he has on his team from year to year.

Don't matter what kind of offense you run, Smashmouth has to do with your team philosophy, the way its coached, the way your team plays, if your team flys around, plays physical, then it is smashmouth, I seen some teams that were all finesse and throw it every down on offense then go over on defense and knock your head off, so I would say that they are smashmouth......

 

I agree. I believe what Ram was talking about was on offense.

2nd part and a close second would be Wisconsin.

 

How did I forget Wisconsin. I love their variant on the Power play. It's like Power Off-tackle mixed with Counter GT because they kick out the DE with an H-Back in motion and then have a guard and the FB lead up in the hole. If that isn't Smashmouth football I don't know what is.

Is that how your school is? My high school one was. Fans were yelling all the time, and one of our coaches (who wasn't really all that old) always said the "3 things" about a passing play. I think he may have said the incompletion was a good thing though in comparison to the INT.

Good post buddy. What did the old-timers in Ramland think about Coach Hoof's Air Raid when it was put in a few years ago? Pretty drastic change, but it still won alot of games. Like you said, I think the best coaches go with what works, and RWHS has had & still has their share of good ones :thumb:.

I agree. I do think it is more of a mindset than a particular offense :thumb:. No matter what offense you run, I prefer that kind of mindset.

Boone County plays smash mouth football I guess you could say Ryle did to.

I was wondering how often this was going on. Seems to me that Raceland has a nice 1A program and could someday be able to break through. I can remember when Raceland would often be mentioned throughout NKY on occasions but not so much anymore. Hope to see them back in the mix very soon...

I was told by a person VERY close to the team/program back then that Hoof was going to throw the fooball 50-60 times a game. I doubled over laughing, didn't believe it. Raceland probably hadn't thrown the ball 50 times in school history.

Yes the Rams have had plenty of good football coaches....Conley in the 60's, Heck and Snyder in the 70's, Michaels and then B.T. Ross in the 80's leading to Vanderhoof and now coach Maynard. I have always said that Raceland coaches have gotten far too much blame when the Rams lose and not enough credit when we win. That is the life of a coach anywhere, especially at Raceland.

I know in Kentucky most the teams they say are smashmouth don't have any titles lately??? HMMMMM?

Mayfield had that problem in the 08 and 09 seasons.

Gun divide(counter trap) offense...3-5 defense.

All I know about "smashmouth football" is that I get a chuckle every time a fan boasts about how his or her team plays "smashmouth football" and how his or her team is going to come out and physically dominate an opponent. I guess if you say something to yourself often enough you start believing it.

 

I also know that if you are going to run between the tackles a large majority of the time, you better have a huge advantage (size and strength wise) over your opponents, or you won't be playing in the state game very often. Even if a team has those advantages, a well coached, disciplined defense with a lot of speed can thwart those advantages.

 

To me, a much more diversified offense that spreads out and thins the defense is much, much more effective over the long haul and can be a great equalizer when a team doesn't have the size or strength of its opponent.

 

I'm obviously not a high school football coach and have never coached a high school team to one win, but I've played and watched the game closely over the years, plus I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night.
