May 2, 201115 yr We had troops on the ground in Afghanistan only a couple of hours after 9/11 but it takes 8 months to get Osama when we know where he is? Is it a case of worrying too much about what others will/do think? An article I read said that they were constantly re-visiting the intelligence and revising the plans based on that. In addition once it was decided to go in with SEALS they had to reconstruct the compound and put the SEALS through a lot of training exercises.
May 2, 201115 yr I have two leaving for Central America in the next month. My youngest is going to Honduras next month. I'm not all that worried, though.

Pay no attention to the success and not one American life lost in an operation 30 miles from a foreign capital near a military base. Maybe you and westsider can go have a good PM discussion or start another thread and let the rest of us enjoy this victory.
May 2, 201115 yr I have to agree with Clyde on this. I know Americans love conspiracies, but no way Obama would make that announcement if he wasnt sure. Agree 100%.

It's a fair question to ask to those of us that have no idea what really goes on. I didn't read anything negative into it. It's a fair question and one that will be asked by many.

In addition once it was decided to go in with SEALS they had to reconstruct the compound and put the SEALS through a lot of training exercises. I wouldn't expect them to be able to go in within a couple of days or even weeks but 8 months gives an awful lot of time for things to change.
May 2, 201115 yr I wouldn't expect them to be able to go in within a couple of days or even weeks but 8 months gives an awful lot of time for things to change. No question. My guess is it was a strategy of "let's be darn sure and let's make sure nothing changes."

Is it a case of worrying too much about what others will/do think? They weren't positive in August he was there. They only knew it had to be target of high interest and possibly Osama. By February they were as sure as they were going to be he was there and that's when they started planning the attack. I would prefer they take their time and get this one right.

What he said was he was briefed on a POSSIBLE lead in August, and it was far from certain and it took many months to run this to ground. Then last week Obama thought we had enough Intel to take action. The first option was to blow the hell out of the place, but he wanted proof we got him.

My guess is it was a strategy of "let's be darn sure and let's make sure nothing changes." This is my guess as well. Again they didn't know who was in there for sure, only it had to be somebody big. As long as you are conducting survalance on the place he wasn't getting out without us knowing.
May 2, 201115 yr I would love to know what went through the SEAL team members minds the second they confirmed Osama was in fact there.

Makes sense. Wanted to make sure it was him, in the past we had bad Intel. Possibly seeing who else may arrive too? What he said was he was briefed on a POSSIBLE lead in August, and it was far from certain and it took many months to run this to ground. Then last week Obama thought we had enough Intel to take action. The first option was to blow the hell out of the place, but he wanted proof we got him. A HUGE key IMO. I was afraid that if/when we did get him that Al Qeada would release one of their videos saying he was still alive. I didn't think they'd ever be able to get him in close quarters like that. Of course, I never thought he'd leave the mountains either.
May 2, 201115 yr As someone who is very much a critic of President Obama, I thought his speech was great last night. Also thought the statements by President's Bush and Clinton were awesome as well. Just feels absolutely great to be an American today! Thank you to all our troops overseas and stateside! I'm checking Hell's temperature as we speak, because I agree with all of your points. I thought that the President's speech was very much on point. Much as I thought President Bushs' was immediately following 9/11. We can disagree 'till the cows come home (we in general, not just you and I) about how things proceeded from there, but that was GWB's finest moment. My gratitude to everyone who pulled this off, from the President to his national security team to the guys with the big stones on the ground.:thumb:
