I could not think of any, but would like to know if anybody knows of any examples. I agree the NCAA is far from consistant with punishments and whatever punishment Tressel gets for this mess, he deserves.

Don't know if your question is about NCAA penalties or just penalties but, I said this during the bowl season. The best example to have followed then was set by Lou Holtz at the end of the '77 season and just prior to the '78 Orange Bowl when Arkansas (10-1) took on #2 ranked Oklahoma (10-1). Holtz had 3 players commit some infraction vs. team rules. He did not take them on the trip. (BTW, it was Ben Cowins - still all time leading rusher at AK -, Donny Bobo - his top receiver that year -, and I think the 2nd leading rusher) He was being pressured by many and the "race" card was actually used by some against Holtz. But he took his 3rd string RB named Sales and whipped OU 31-6. I don't know if that was an answer to your example or not.
March 9, 201115 yr Should OSU Football and Tressel get heavy sanctions put on them and they just may then is like I said before, I certainly hope not but if they do I will not try to defend it or try to defend Tress and will say and feel the same thing as always about top programs including U.K. basketball after all the sanctions from Eddie Suttons years. "there is no one player, no one coach or administrator bigger than tne program". OSU football like U.K. basketball will survive and return to the top.

My point was in this case the NCAA ruled almost imediatly on the case and set the punishment for the players for the first five games of this season. My question was after the NCAA has issued its penalties or sanctions, has any coach or program penalized players more than what was set by the NCAA. I could not think of an instance. Your reference above sounds like Lou's decision came prior to the NCAA handing out their punishment. Im with oldrambler, whatever the punishment the NCAA hands down I am fine with and I am in no way defending his or the players actions. For those who were hoping this would be the downfall of the program, I don't see that happening even if they have to resort to new leadership in the future.
March 9, 201115 yr One thing that does not suprise me is all the joy and celebations over this imo just bc it is Ohio State. Yes, there would be some over other schools and coaches/programs but not close to as it is with OSU. talk about absolutes on here, they are....some unrealistic U.K. basketball fans, some fans that believe that anyone not in the SEC is terrible and not legit and the all out hatred of Ohio State. I am not just talking about this thread, I am saying anything Ohio State. Are some really so insecure and feel threatened by that they have to jump all over a certain program? Do they feel that much of a "superior being, better than thou" mentality? Jeez, I have fun jumping on U.T. and Pearl but I know enough that I am not worried about U.T. being better than my team/teams and if they were or beat me then I wouldn't like it but I think that I would/could deal with it. To each his own I guess, lol. I am not singling out any one individual, there are a few to choose from. JMO Again, this report seems to have some truth to it and if all allegations are determined true then OSU and.or Tressel should be penalized. I in no way am saying that there shouldn't be. I am done with it untill any more dcisions/penalties are issued.

I'm a little long in the tooth. :lol: I think that had Woody Hayes known that some of his players had "sold away" OSU awards, etc. - they would not have played in that bowl game. The NCAA let them play because MONEY. End of story and shows their lack of integrity in this as well IMO.

Maurice Clarett (occurred under Tressel's watch) Troy Smith (also under Tressel) Tattoo Gate (again under Tressel, and he played a part in the cover-up) Seems like Tressel maybe letting the inmates run the asylum... Don't forget Youngstown State getting hammered under his watch.
