This is the price we have to pay for the right to free speech in this country ... even if we feel that Westboro's actions are despicable and tasteless, they are entitled to voice their opinion.

 

This decision could do more damage than anything. If your a cop and one of your fraternity is killed. I feel sorry for the criminal when they are found. Now they're saying that organizations like the VFW and so forth need to protest themselves. Well if you are one of the fraternity and someone is proclaiming shame on you. At a funeral none the less...

As much as I despise the loons that are the Westboro Baptist Church I have to say that I agree with this decision and I thought this would be the outcome when I first heard about the case. It's very,very easy to defend free speech when you agree with the message, it's much more difficult when you don't.

It's just a matter of time. They're eventually going to lose a few members of their congregation at one of these funeral protest events.

There will be agreat justifiable homicide and temporary insanity defense at someone's trial someday.

No doubt about it in my mind and then unfortunately they become martyrs.

I don't wish harm on anybody but sometimes Its hard not to get the thought about a bus full of them flipping down the interstate and slamming a guard rail on the way to picket a soldiers funeral.

Something many of us can agree on! I am usually not like this BUT, you have all these crazy people running around shooting and killing inocent people, some which I believe just want to have people remember who they were after they go on their killing spree. Hey, A LOT of people will remember them if they get rid of Phelps and his daughter ( I THINK I'm thinking of her?)! Then people can go to Topeka and protest their compound, saying Rev Phelps was allowed to be killed by God, that God hates Westboro and Phelps, change it around on them!

You say that and all, but amazingly enough they've made numerous forays into Kentucky, and none of our prone-to-violence brethren have taken that step. I used to think this was surprising, now I'm just disappointed that Kentucky rednecks are apparently only interested in beating on their womenfolk and kids, rather than directing their anger towards worthy recipients.

I've heard that these genetic misfits have been attacked before but that they have cohorts in the crowd recording the proceedings, then when attacked they use their law degrees (most of these tools are attorneys just one more reason...) to agressively persue damages using the video as evidence. They apparantly sue at the drop of a hat and use their "winnings" to fund their hate.
