Yeagle officially resigns at Beechwood

Featured Replies

No. I was replying to Fritz's claim of Yeagle being the "best ever" and that "no one coming close to matching him." I disagree.

That said, what Yeagle did year in and year out was remarkable in building one program to an elite status for 20+ years.

But it's premature to call him the "best ever"

I bet if you asked every player who go to play under him like myself they would think he is the best ever. I remember when he coached the Ky Allstars against the Tenn Allstars back in 95. I have been told many players had tears in their eyes after he gave them his pre game speech. The man was an unbelieveable coach. It just stinks he went out like he did agains LCA.

So who takes over the duties?

Burnett?

Hergott?

Rash?

I have heard from a coach from there they are going to hire within. If Burnett didn't get it or want I was hoping they would do what Cov Cath did this year.

I may have missed something, but I haven't seen anything in print, nor in these forums, actually stating Yeagle submitted his resignation to the school. Can anyone confirm his letter of resignation has been received by school administrators?

ICN6 reported it today that it has been comfirmed. That is what I would think everyone is going on.

Ending one of the great runs in KY High School football. 15 seasons, 8 Class A titles and 3 Class A Runner ups (11 Championship appearaHe alsonces in 15 seasons...AMAZING) Best of Luck in whatever you do, coach.

He also did this when Lloyd and New Cath was in the district. Back then the Nky Class A and Class AAA district was the toughest in the state.

Asked this week if Yeagle was the greatest coach in state history, his most common adversaries' responses followed a common theme: who's better?

"Just look at his record in the (19)90s," said Danville coach Sam Harp, who is second to Yeagle on the state title wins list with seven and is 1-1 against Yeagle in state championship games. "I don't think anyone will every accomplish something like that again."

It's a popular opinion, even among the state's very best football coaches.

"He's one of the best," said Bardstown coach Joey Downs, whose teams lost to Yeagle's twice in the state finals. "I played against him and Sam Harp and (former Boyle County coach) Chuck Smith. He's right there. There's not a penny's worth of difference between them. Great coach. Kids were great, smart, hard-nosed kids. I just wish I could have beat him once."

Much of the time, Yeagle won state championships with inferior talent, a fact that both infuriated and inspired his counterparts. Former Harrodsburg coach Alvis Johnson coached four future Division I players on his defensive line when it lost to Beechwood in both the 1996 and 1997 state championship games.

"Mike got a lot of mileage out of a lot of kids. He didn't have all-world talent," said Johnson. "People like to think they had all-world talent. But he beat teams that were definitely more talented than his, including mine. But he always found a way to win because he instilled in his players the desire to win."

That desire was year-round. It started on the bus ride home from Louisville, when Yeagle would literally cross off the names of seniors on his roster and begin planning for the next title run.

"That's the thing I liked about him, he never took winning for granted," said Johnson, now an associate athletic director at the University of Kentucky. "Next year was always a new year. And he did whatever he had to do to get those kids ready to win another state championship."

We'll give the final word on the subject to Newport Central Catholic coach Bob Schneider - the state's all-time leader in coaching wins, a coach who faced Yeagle more than anyone.

"He gave it everything. He was just so intense," Schneider said. "He had a great run and he made us all get better because the way he was dominating single-A. I know he made us get better. It's kind of a bittersweet thing. ... I hate to see him go."

"Much of the time, Yeagle won state championships with inferior talent ..."

Yeagle is a tremendous coach, no doubt, but I have some trouble with that statement. You can't tell me that, during their great run, Beechwood's talent level wasn't consistently among the best in Class A.

Sure, the Harrodsburg teams of that era may have had more big-time talent, but was it better across the board than Beechwood's?

Sometimes it works both ways, too ... I still think the Beechwood team that lost to Mayfield in the 1995 title game was probably the better team.

Better than Mayfield of 95? i disagree. But anyway he was a good coach.

Beechwood was up 14-7 midway through the 2nd Qtr. and completed a long pass down to the 4; Beechwood was called for a very, very questionable offensive pass interference, which prevented them from going up 21-7. If they go up two TD's, they win. Instead Mayfield, completes a virtual Hail Mary right before half to tie the game. Big momentum switch in what had been mostly all Beechwood to that point.

Key phrase being "to that point". Anyway, getting back on track with this thread; Yeagle was awesome; "one of" the best ever.

Sticking to Yeagle topic, with a 14 point lead, he didn't lose too many-if any at all. Especially to a team with Mayfield's minimal passing attack.

I bet if you asked every player who go to play under him like myself they would think he is the best ever.

This same thing could be said for probably 10-15 coaches around the state, if not more. He certainly is on a very short list. I would hate to follow him.

Athletically, overall, I'd say that NewCath was better than Beechwood many times when they played. Yeagle took his athletes and put them in better positions to take over a game See Berger and Wulfeck throug Menetry. Overall, however, I'd say that they beat teams that they shouldn't have more than any other team, at least in NKY (i.e. CovCath)

I don't think many will attempt to. Too tough of an act to follow!

I agree with Wildcat I thought that Beechwood was the better team. I wish that the 94 Beechwood team who was like the Mayfield team of 95 could have played. The 94 Murray team was like the 95 Beechwood team they a very strong team. I just wish the state games would have been the opposite years.
