What ever happened to attending school?

Featured Replies

Two high school football signings this week (I'm sure there were more) disturb me. First we hear from the Boyle County player who says he took a day off from class to clear his mind... or something akin to that. Then we have the mini LeBron show at Seneca at 1:30 yesterday (Friday). Did I miss JCPS being off? Perhaps the Seneca player has already graduated, but how about the posse in attendance that I assume P.T. Barnum assembled? Folks, this is getting out of hand.

It is my understanding that the young man from Seneca had already graduated - and returned there to announce his decision. The Boyle Co. situation was a real "love fest" - seems like the whole town was there. Elected Officials making speeches, etc.

But you make a very valid point about "cutting the students loose" - etc.

I don't get why you are so upset. How many times do you sign a letter of intent at with a school that can be the difference between making millions in four years or toiling for four? The education is already paid for so that is equal. You have a senior take a day off to clear his head or make an announcement in the media. What's the big deal? If it is just for this special occassion, how is it hurting them?

May be more of a parental issue than a school issue.

Why not let the kid have attention? I just don't see the negative. They are good at football and it is a once in a lifetime decision, I believe they should be recognized.

Also, I think it is fun to watch they different way players announce, it makes it more exciting. Like Isaiah Crowell pulling out a little UGA to annouce to Georgia, or Jeff Demps Putting on a orange and blue wig for Florida. Stuff like that is entertaining. If it wasn't entertaining people wouldn't watch.

One of the most exciting times in a high school students life is being recruited. Getting mail from an interested school is great, getting attention from college coaches is great, getting a scholarship is even better. One of the most exciting times in a players life, why not enjoy it, embrace it, make it a great time.

It doesn't bother me at all....if kids would like the opportunity to have their friends around, that's fine with me.

Herbstreit went off on this subject Wednesday. It is one thing to publicly announce a decision, but some of the kids nationwide have taken it to the extreme. ESPN and other media outlets are equally at fault.

^ If the media didn't hype it that much, the kids wouldn't act like fools. I wonder what it'll be like when Quick, Hatcher, and co....sign.

It doesn't bother me one bit. Personally, I think it can help add a since of pride to the school for not only the young man, but for all of those in the student body who want to attend these signings. I get so sick of the FFA, Band, Choir, Academic Team, etc., that get to haul their partcipating students out of class, and sometimes for multiple days, to events (AS THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TOO, AS WELL!) yet nothing is ever said. However, let football, basketball, baseball/softball kids get to take any amount of time off for a class to make their decision and/or join in on all of the excitement of having a peer accomplishing their dreams, while at the same time allowing that to shed light on the school and program, then let's cause an uproar over that.

The simple fact is: the classroom is not the only place that education takes place at a high school, it takes place in the band room, the gym, the football field, the baseball field; on the academic trips, on the band trips, on the college visits, with the interviews; and yes while making the decision on what college to attend.

You hit the nail on the head.

Well, I'll bet you it's not during school hours... and should either need a day to "clear his head" I'm sure there will be some jug to help.

It is suppost to be all about the kids, let them have fun with it. A once in a lifetime thing.

Some people will always see the glass half empty!

I agree with most of you on here. If a young man has put in the time and is a special enough Student-Athlete to be recruited. Then allow those young men to enjoy their paycheck how THEY choose.
