CovCath has got to get more production out of their guards to get to the region and then make some noise. At this moment I am skeptical that it will happen, but still plenty of season left.

How many 3s did Big Grin Arlinghaus hit? I heard he lit it up pretty well.

 

It is beyond me why CovCATH stayed in a zone as long as they did. Jerry had to be salivating as he sat there in the right corner waiting to shoot his "almost" set shot 3 pointers. I would love to see the scoring chart as to where HC scored their points. If the scored more than 16 points in the paint I would be shocked. It almost looked like they thought they were playing Holmes instead of HC.

Don't see Connelly in the box score? Assuming he played and was shut out? Very surprising if that is the case he has been pretty solid scoring the basketball as of late.

I was at the game last night and observed the following: Connelly had no passion and it resulted in 0 points, Listerman has no idea how to get his team out of the funk they are in, the HC players played with incredible heart and it propelled them to this victory and lastly beating CCH again in the districts will not be hard for HC if they play the same way next time. CCH is struggling and the players seem very frustrated.

 

I know that in the last two game Scott (8 - 3 pointers) and HC (9 - 3 pointers) equals 51 total points to CCH 1 - 3 pointer in the same two games. You will never win if you are outscored 51 - 3 in 3 pointers. CCH played a 1-3-1 zone against both teams - maybe the coaches can see that maybe that isn't our best defense.

Why would CCH play a zone against a poor shooting team like HC? With their size advantage you would think they would go man-man. I know Arlinghaus was hot last night but overall this Indian team cant shoot and seems to only score if they get turnovers in the backcourt and easy layups.

 

I am curious how many turnovers the Colonels had and where most of them occurred. They say it doesnt matter if you have Wilt Chamberlain on the block offensively, if you cant get the ball down the court to feed him he is useless. However it seems Thelen scored 29 so obviously they found a way to get it down the court, I am just wondering where most of Holy Cross' points came from whether it was off turnovers or shooting over the 1-3-1.

I agree with you assessment that we should have played man, but wouldn't you typically play zone against a poor shooting team? That seems backwards. We held them to 21 points the first half, only because they were ice cold. They hit 9 three's. They made open shots.

First of all, HC may have been cold in the 1st half but that doesn't mean that they would stay cold the entire game. CCH had a 6 point lead mid-way through 3rd quarter when CCH went to a 1-3-1 zone. On 3 consecutive times down the court HC hit 3 - 3 pointers to take a 3 point lead. It was an immediate 9 point swing that dramatically changed the momentum to HC. CCH made little adjustments. The CCH guards did not have many turnovers (not sure of total turnovers) and played a good game, however didn't score many points. The points came from Thelen. CCH will not win if they continue to play non-effective zone defenses that allow wide open shots. Believe me that the 3 pointers that HC was shooting were wide open. They were rarely contested and they knocked them down. HC may not be known for as an outside shooting team but they showed that was all they had to do to beat CCH last night.

Made my first ever visit to Covington Catholic for basketball tonight and loved every minute of it. I was very impressed with the resilience of Holy Cross. I'm not sure they are that great of a team, but they played hard and kept battling and came out ahead. When they got hot late in the third quarter the tide completely turned. If they had nailed some foul shots throughout it wouldn't have been this close.

 

I was less than impressed with Covington Catholic's guard play. They didn't handle the ball well and didn't appear to have anyone that could shoot consistently. Thelen was really good, but he was more of a junk-man tonight. Cleaned up a lot of stuff around the basket, but I think they should have ran more designed sets to get him looks. The big kid, Baker, was all thumbs for most of the game, although he did come on late. If those two had been playing better, or at least if the team had been playing through them more, I think CovCath would have got the win.

 

Finally, I really enjoyed the student sections for both sides. Holy Cross brought a good road atmosphere and the Ghostbusters skit at halftime was really cool. I had seen CovCath at the state tournament a few years back and knew what to expect, but they still put on a nice show. The halftime stuff with the one kid leading cheers and then the "Rocky" stuff with punches was terrific. Great night all around!
