Is there a more thankless job than being a basketball official? Every game people leave saying you did a horrible job. Has there ever been a game where everyone left and said the officials were great tonight? Pick just about any basketball thread on here and you will probably find someone bashing officials. Let alone what you hear at the games. Basketball is a fast paced, CONTACT sport that lends itself to different views on what happened ... on almost every play. I know.... I have been caught up in the action and my loyalties just like everyone else. So let me say thank you to everyone who officiates basketball games. Despite what you hear every night and read, we do appreciate you getting out there night after night and taking a beating. I have no doubt that you love basketball more than anyone, or else you wouldn't do what you do night after night. Keep doing your best and know that we all thank you for your efforts ... even when we tell you that you stink. :ylsuper:

Dont forget, they are getting over $50 a game for JV and $60 for varsity. That equates to about $20 an hour counting travel time for most refs. That is a pretty good reason to do it night after night. Not sure that they all love it.

What region is this the pay scale?

Don't forget the meetings, camps, training, uniforms, gas, etc. It all adds up to a lot less per hour.

I think that they should be required to watch game film after the fact.

As I have told a couple of stripes,

I'm not sure what region that sportsmaniac is talking about but, the payscale in the 8th region is $55 for a JV game and a varsity official gets $65 for a 3 man crew or $75 for a 2 man crew. Regardless, still a thankless job....every call 50% are satisfied and 50% are upset. My only comment to those that do officiate, if you're not in it for the athlete's, then don't do it. I also like SPINDOCS comment about watching game film...dont know where, when, and with whom the film should be reviewed with but, this should be required twice a year.....for everyone!!!!!!!!

It's like every other profession. There are those who can and those who can't. There are those who want to get better and those who think they're already great. And there are those who are truly in it for the kids and others who simply like the power or attention.

Thanks to those who can, those who want to continue to improve and those in it for the kids. There is no doubt it is one of the most thankless jobs there is.

In the 6th and 7th region, for putting up with coaches and Twitter, officials get 47.50 for a 3 man varsity game. So all of the LIT games or KIng of the Bluegrass, or any regional game, the lucky target of abuse gets to be there an hour and a half before the game, pay for all of his and her uniforms, and spends most of game fees on ibuprophen and ben-gay and goes out there night after night. And yes, they love it.

 

As to watching game film, every official goes through training every year with observers and most go through self paid camps to improve themselves. imagine if you will, a doctor or a lawyer review every consul on tape or even a plumber or a policeman having a split second decision shown on the 11:00 sports review to see.

 

Imagine this commentary- "Well Brent,, you're looking live and it seems like the plumber has put a 3/4 inch pipe fitting on a 5/8 inch pipe because that's what he had on his truck. It looks like, yes you can see it on the replay, that moisture is forming, and yes, there's a drip, ladies and gentleman, there's a droplet. Wow, he wasn't in the position to even make that work."....
