January 21, 201115 yr high school ranks? I have seen a mixed bag. My coaches in high school were very respectful but I have been around some through the years that were a little on the edge. Anyone?
January 21, 201115 yr If people think it doesn't go on in HS they either need to get out to more games, or sit a bit closer to the bench.
January 21, 201115 yr If people think it doesn't go on in HS they either need to get out to more games, or sit a bit closer to the bench. Are you talking about profanity in general, berating a player, or the use of the specific profanity that Calipari used?
January 21, 201115 yr As one who is up close during basketball games I can tell you that it's nowhere near what goes on at the college level. There may be cursing but I never hear the F bomb. It might happen in a huddle but I bet it's not that common. I'd guess football has the highest rate of cursing by coaches.
January 21, 201115 yr The F bomb is the hot button issue. Some/many think it should be said at the high school level. I get that. Some think that it's all a matter of context. All F bombs are not created equally.
January 21, 201115 yr I mentioned Bob Knight earlier and we all can remember the time he was late for his NCAA pressor and how he acted. I believe a lot of coaches would hate to have a "tag" like Bobby. My son played football at a high school and he wants to go into the ministry and he came to us wanting to quit due to the coaches/players language. He wasn't use to it. "be an example" we told him and he was glad he stayed. Bo Pelino got some heat a while back due to getting caught with his QB on camera. What the public don't see, the public don't know. Coach Cal made his remarks personal. The kid was hurt.
January 21, 201115 yr An 'F' bomb followed by an 'MF' bomb is not cool whatsoever, if all those hypocritical UK fans had found out Pitino or Coach K had done that they would be crashing the message boards with disgust and jokes, but Cal will always be able to get away with anything, even cheating, just win baby!!!:irked:
January 21, 201115 yr I have no problem with it at the college level because it's the culture there and the players (most of the time) are adults and have in most circumstances chosen to play for that coach. Cal coached like that at Memphis and at UMass, and I don't remember a player saying he had a problem with Cal after he stopped playing for him. However, I don't believe in that kind of language at the HS level or lower. Most of the players are still kids, they (for the most part) don't get to pick what school they go to. They're usually not on scholarship, and many of them do not live the game the way you have to in college. You can get by in high school just liking the sport you play, but you can't do that in college. I see no reason a HS coach would curse a kid, especially calling them a MF or something like that. If a coach lets a lesser 4 letter word drop in the right kind of context I'm not going to complain though. At this point of my life I do not think I'd ever curse a kid out as a coach. I hope that my mindset never changes in that regard, and I don't believe it will. When I coached 5th and 6th grades I let one ugly word slip out when a coach literally ran the score up on us. He said he was just running his offense, I replied that what he said was "crap". I felt awful right after saying that, (not that I said it to him but I had players standing beside me) but at 19 I really was not the most mature person in the world. I sincerely apologized to the players and their parents in our team huddle after the game, because I felt it was the right thing to do and I promised myself I would never do anything like that again. I don't know that I would say that this has become a problem in HS sports. I think that it happens, but most coaches I've come into contact with do not act like this. I've been cursed by only a coach or two in my life, but they did not use real strong profanity. So after this long rant, I would say no.
January 21, 201115 yr I find it interesting that Cal gets a free pass for cussing a player on national TV while BCG got raked over the coals for his national TV comments to Jeannine Edwards that contained NO profanity. Seems like a double standard.
January 22, 201115 yr I find it interesting that Cal gets a free pass for cussing a player on national TV while BCG got raked over the coals for his national TV comments to Jeannine Edwards that contained NO profanity. Seems like a double standard. I would draw a distinction between the two events. Coach Cal's words were directed to Terrence Jones, and they were not intended to be broadcast over ESPN. No different that what happened to George Bush or Joe Biden. BCG made is comments during an interview that he knew was being broadcast over live TV. I think you have to be able to filter yourself in these situations. If Cal handled himself like a horses behind such as BCG did, I would be upset as well. As far as cursing at a player, I have no problem with it at all. Be it Cal, Pitino, Williams, Knight, K, Calhoun, etc. I've read that Jim Calhoun even included a section in his book describing how it was necessary to curse at players in given situations. I remember my high school and college days, and maybe I'm a bad egg, but it wasn't at all uncommon for my friends and I to address each other with those same words used by Cal. Let's not act like high school kids (as a whole) aren't not only exposed, but a are actively using this type of language. I'm bet Terrence Jones heard worse langague comming out of his ear buds on the flight back to Lexington.

Hypocrisy is repulsive and disgusting. Nothing worse than pretending to be something you aren't, wouldn't you agree?

All F bombs are not created equally. When I coach I tell players I understand to a point if they are upset and something slips, but that I would rather hear the F-Bomb than the Lord's name in vain. And as much as I hate to admit it, (gulp) Coack K as well, they win! I would not be upset at anything they said.

It might happen in a huddle but I bet it's not that common. I'd guess football has the highest rate of cursing by coaches. I occasionally hear it from hoops coaches and players in games, but not regularly. Usually always if I hear it, an official does and rewards them accordingly with a T, because my hearing ain't what it used to be. I agree it's nowhere near what you see in college games. It is much more prominent in HS FB, but some coaches are better about it than others. In college football, it's kind of like what they say about holding calls and illegal blocks -- they could call it on every single play if they decided to.
January 25, 201115 yr Overall, I don't think it is a problem to use a "action" word when describing action events on the sports field. But when it goes from that to a personal comment (directed at the person, i.e "You...... - " ) then it has crossed the line. Real leaders and motivators don't need rough lauguage to make the point. And there is no room for ever taking the Lords name in vain in any context
