Fashion Rules You Live By

Featured Replies

I saw a picture of a guy wearing nice 3-button suit coat but he only had the top button buttoned. Yikes. That's a fashion rule violation in my book. It got me to wondering what rules you folks live by.

I say a sports coat/suit coat always has the bottom button unbuttoned.

Gig line , of course. That one drives me nuts when I see it.

Black dress shirts with ties - ixne.

Others?

Unless you're dressed up in a suit, fat men should never tuck in their shirts, unless they want to make their gut look 10 times as big as it already is. For what it's worth, I never wear suits.

What is a Gig line?

Shoe color needs to match the belt color. I think fashion is dead with today's kids anyway. The sloppy look seems to be the norm which I cannot stand. Back in the day, guys dressed sharp and cared about what they looked liked.

What about gray dress pants with black shirt?

I may in the minority but unless you're bringing me my wine at the table I don't want to see you in a black dress shirt.

Completely agree. With a two-button jacket, the top button is the only one to button. And honestly, IMO, with a three-button jacket, I view the top button the same way I do the bottom...there for decoration only...so, only the middle one get's buttoned.

So my white leisure suit with a black shirt and white tie is a no-no?

I think guys need to have a MUCH better understanding of what a properly fitting shirt actually is. Too often I see people with dress shirts that are MUCH to big. Also, don't be afraid of the tailor...

Gym shoes are to be worn with t-shirts and t-shirts only. Nothing IMO looks more tacky than someone wearing a nice polo or button up with jeans and a pair of gym shoes.

Belt, socks, and shoe color always match when wearing business attire.

Collars are NEVER popped on polos or button ups. On zip up hoodie, sweaters, etc., collars are NEVER turned down.

Never wear the same tie more than once in a week. This one drives me crazy.

And if you're going to wear the winter hats with the bills, for the love of god, do not wear the dang thing frontwards or backwards like you would a baseball cap. The bill is meant to be worn tilted to the side or completely on the side, not the front or back.

They also have to have a much better understanding of what goes with what.

Oh, and seriously guys, pink is a color. It's not the plague. You're allowed to wear it.

I disagree a nice pair of white casual shoes will look just fine with jeans and a polo.

It's according to the setting but for the majority of the time I'm with you on this one. I wear my NB's with a polo quite often but never would I wear tennis shoes to a wedding, funeral, etc.

Don't kid yourself a fat guy with his shirt untucked looks every bit as fat as a fat guy with his shirt tucked in, it is just the one with it untucked looks fat and sloppy. If you are overweight I think you look a lot less sloppy and overall more put together if you establish a waist line and maintain it with a belt. :D

Not that I would know.
