Vinny Zollo shatters backboard

Clark County senior Vinny Zollo, a Western Kentucky University signee, shattered a backboard on Friday at the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

In the first quarter of a consolation game against Wheeler (Ga.), Zollo went up for a dunk that was contested by a Wheeler defender. As he attempted to throw down the dunk, the glass shattered but stayed largely in place.

The Myrtle Beach Sun News reported the tournament was delayed an hour an a half.

"These rims are so loose anyway," Zollo told the newspaper. "They’re meant so that kind of thing won’t happen. It’s kind of a one-in-a-million thing."

I thought I noticed you come on the court taking pics on the TV coverage.

 

I can see a game being delayed long and postponed at a high school, but surprised this venue didn't have extra goals on site.

Yes I did take pictures. They had the goal but not on the extra roll out cart. They had to take the shattered one down and then what took so long was getting the new one up. They said in the 30 years of having the tourney, nothing like this had ever happened, but they would be prepared next year.

 

Zollo was named to the All tourney team and also recieved the Individual Hustle Award

Just curious.. Is this the only case of a Kentucky high school basketball player breaking a backboard on a dunk?

Watched the video on the site and they mentioned it had been 10 years since it had happened, dunk was missed, he hung on to the rim for a second and it shattered.

I know during my career Conner shattered two boards in a week. Both were in pregame warmups. When I attended Morehead a guy shatter one in the rec center, it busted all to pieces and cut a few players.

Didn't Winston Bennet crack a backboard during the LIT back when he played for Lousiville Male?

I watched the replay of the game and heard that. I was suprised because the Tourney Director told us it had not been done before and that is where I got my info.

 

When I get my camra back I hope to post some pictures of the tourney.

I know that Tony Key of Russellville shattered one in the 1998 or 1999 season. If memory serves me correctly, he shattered another too. I remember being at the Sweet 16 and seeing Russellville's fan t-shirts read 'A Shattering Season' and a cartoon depiction of a Panther shattering a backboard.

Yes, they lost to Miller Grove in OT. They are really good. Very athletic.
